A great addition to your bird toy making set, because they're made of thick, tough plastic. String them with other Build Your Own Bird Toy parts to make a toy suitable to your bird's special tastes. Is your bird tough on wood or wicker? The plastic gear wheels can be strung on Metal Chains to climb on and they're great to tuck treats into for foraging fun. Waffle Wafers are different shapes to pique your bird's interest-a must for in-cage enrichment. Star Rings may be strung on thicker chain or rope, and each has six grooved orbs your pet bird will want to explore. Combine any or all of these with wood, wicker, and paper to provide a carnival of texture for your bird.

Toys should be cleaned weekly. Remove toys from cage and wash them with hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow toys to dry completely before returning them to your bird's cage. It is a good idea to have two or more sets of toys so clean, dry ones can be quickly placed back in the cage while the other set dries. Discard any toy that does not come clean, is frayed, or broken.
The Importance of Toys
A creative toy is a boon your bird's social and physical well-being. Though toys are often regarded as accessories or peripheral items, toys offer caged birds a variety of engaging activities, including chewing, climbing, beak trimming, and preening.
It is not uncommon for caged birds to develop behavioral problems due to a lack of mental and physical stimulation. Toys help create a challenging and diverse environment and are an easy and effective way to prevent many negative behaviors triggered by boredom.
Other benefits of toys include
- Trust and bond building. A bird will naturally trust someone- and bond with someone- who is constantly giving him new things to challenge his brain.
- Helping him get used to new situations. Birds are naturally fearful of change. If you have lots of toys and switch them regularly adding more kinds, birds will more easily adapt to new situations.
- Keeping you entertained. You will naturally pay more attention to your bird when he plays, which means you can keep a close eye on your bird for changes in behavior and health.
