Rated 5 out of 5 by FLmoose Tackles Even the Toughest Feeder Funkiness! We live in a new, partially finished development with almost no trees; not the most appealing setting for song birds. Yet my husband and I are both avid bird watchers, so our fleet of bird feeders was one of the first things we installed upon moving into our new home. Unfortunately, it took the birds a while to find us, and this initially meant lots of mildewed seed and spoiled suet here in South Florida. We even got maggots in one of our seed tube feeders (sooooo gross)! The feeder situation had gotten so "icky" that we almost gave up trying to attract birds to our yard. It was just too exhausting bringing them in each week to dump the uneaten seed and suet, soak them in the sink, scrub them clean, refill them, and then rehang them, in the hopes that maybe one or two birds would visit. My husband began just hosing the feeders off on the patio once a week, but I continued to worry about mold and mildew lingering from spoiled seed. Since we back up to a small pond, I was also concerned about using chemicals out on the patio. I came across this biodegradable cleaner while purchasing bird seed, and decided to give it a try. Now I wonder how I ever fed birds without it! We use this cleaner right out on the patio: dump the old seed, spray the feeder with the cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, quick once-over with a scrub brush (if necessary), and then rinse with the hose. All the grime and grunge comes right off! No lingering after-smell, no feeder avoidance for days after cleaning. In fact, anecdotal evidence indicates our doves prefer the most recently cleaned feeder (if we clean the two trey feeders at different times). Now that the birds have found us, we rarely have issues with seed or suet going bad before it gets devoured. We continue to use this weekly during the high-traffic feeder season and at least monthly during low-traffic times on all of our feeders to keep them sanitary for our feathered friends.
