Push the soft plastic perch covers over the ends of the hex perches until the covers fit tightly against the feeder. The perch covers allow birds to grip the perch with ease, encouraging longer feeder visits.
Selection of food
Fill your new feeder with seed that attract the variety of birds you prefer. Black oil sunflower seed is the best individual seed from attracting common feeder visitors. Other favorites are sunflower hearts, peanuts, safflower, or a seed mixture.
It is very important to clean your feeder. Do not let seed accumulate in the bottom of the feeder. The Quick-Clean removable base makes cleaning your feeder easy. We suggest a quick cleaning of the inside of the bottom of the feeder each time you refill the feeder. To remove the Quick-clean base, simply squeeze the two black buttons on either side of the base and slide the base down. For a more thorough cleaning, the seed deflector may also be removed. Squeeze the sides of the seed deflector and slide it up and off the base unit. Clean out the residue and replace the deflector and base.
This feeder can be hung from a pole system or a tree limb. If you have not been feeding the birds, place the feeder in a spot where thirds are likely to notice it. Place it in the open and ideally within 10-12 feet of some shrubs or trees where birds can land and feel safe. Initially sprinkle 1 to 2 handfuls of seed on the ground beneath the feeder to help the birds locate it. Once the birds have located your feeder, you can move it to a good viewing place and the birds will come to the feeder at its new location.
