Always offer quality seed in your feeders to increase the number and variety of bird with less wasted seed. Store extra seed in a clean, dry container and always check for mold before placing in the feeder. To maximize the number of species that visit your yard, keep a variety of feeders filled, offer multiple seed types, and feed year round.
If you use the cedar enclosure as a nesting box, clean it after birds fledge in the spring. Remove grass, twigs, and other nesting debris. Wash the box thoroughly with a nontoxic soap & water solution. Use a soft-bristled scrub brush to loosen dried droppings, food, or other messes. Rinse the enclosure thoroughly and allow it to dry before replacing it in its usual location. After winter roosting, clean the enclosure again before returning birds arrive.
If you use the Convertible Feeder/Nesting Box as a bird feeder or squirrel feeder, clean it periodically with nontoxic soap and water. Again, use a soft-bristled scrub brush to loosen dried-on messes. Rinse the feeder thoroughly and allow it to dry before replacing it in its usual location and refilling it with fresh seed or feed.
When necessary, remove the clear, plastic panel for cleaning. Wash panel in warm soapy water and rinse. NOTE: Never use an abrasive cleaner on clear plastic, as clarity will be destroyed.
Cedar will weather to a beautiful soft silver/gray. However, untreated cedar wood is porous and may become discolored if left in damp or shaded areas. A 10% solution of household bleach in water will usually remove the stain.
Linseed oil is a safe, natural wood protectant that improves the look and performance of cedar. Simply wipe oil on wood with a soft cloth and allow to dry before adding seed and returning the feeder to its backyard location.
