How to handle & store raw food diets

Enjoy all the benefits of a raw food diet while also being mindful of steps you can take to ensure the best health of your pet and family. Here are our expert tips for the proper handling and storage of commercial raw foods.

Do dehydrated or freeze-dried foods require special handling or storage?

Dehydrated cat foods and freeze-dried cat foods typically contain raw meat, which can contain bacteria that could cause illness if the foods are not properly handled. To keep your (human and canine) family members as healthy as possible, follow these handling guidelines:

  • Keep dehydrated cat foods and freeze-dried cat foods separate from other foods when storing and preparing them.
  • Keep the food package sealed until ready to use, then seal package completely after feeding.
  • After opening the food package, store unused dry contents in a cool, dry place for optimum freshness.
  • For optimal hygiene, feed dehydrated foods or freeze-dried foods in a ceramic bowl or stainless steel bowl, since these non-porous surfaces do not foster bacteria growth.
  • Wash surfaces, utensils, and hands with hot, soapy water after preparing and handling dehydrated dog foods and freeze-dried cat foods.
  • Refrigerate reconstituted/hydrated leftovers immediately.
  • Discard refrigerated leftovers if unused after 3 days.
  • Keep dehydrated ct foods or freeze-dried dog foods away from children.
