|Millet has been a small bird classic for years, and for good reasons - you can almost bet your bird will respond positively to it and it's a great nutritional reward!
Birds actually get to pick their own seed from the sprays, so it's a natural foraging reward.
They love the taste and texture, and the seeds are small enough for even the tiniest beaks.
Though millet is treated like candy by birds, it's actually a grass, and is relatively low in fat - much lower than sunflower seed, and higher in protein than rice or corn. Millet is also highly digestible. Many grains acidify in the stomach, but millet is highly alkaline to counteract acids and digest more easily. Millet is also an excellent source of protein, with one of the highest amino acid profiles of all the cereal grains.
Millet supplies Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, and Vitamin K, as well as the minerals calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, manganese, iron, and potassium. It is, however, not a complete and balanced source of nutrition, so it is important not to let your bird fill herself up on millet; offer it as a healthy treat.
We offer several different varieties of millet, with different sizes of seeds, different textures, and even fruity flavors. The best millet you can buy is fresh spray millet, such as our Golden Sunburst.
Fresh millet is moist and the seeds are firmly attached. Golden Sunburst Millet is premium millet, called Setaria italica, grown in Wisconsin using absolutely no pesticides. Millet comes in large stalks called sprays, and can be woven between cage bars or given to your bird in a millet holder.
