Are your prescription medications the same as what I get from my veterinarian?
Yes. We offer the exact same medications - same brand names, same ingredients, same manufacturers, same strength, same everything. All of our prescription medications are made of FDA-approved ingredients for use in the United States and are guaranteed fresh. In fact, because of the high volume we sell, our medications are likely to be among the freshest available, anywhere. Our high volume is also one of the reasons we can offer medications at considerable cost savings to you.
What are some advantages of getting my prescriptions through Drs. Foster & Smith?
Essentially, we offer the highest quality prescription medications available for a lower cost to the pet owner. And, as mentioned above, our medications are guaranteed fresh. Also, we have a team of pharmacists and veterinarians working with your veterinarian to ensure your pet gets exactly what she needs for her best health.
Our pharmacists are fully licensed, and handle your prescription exactly the same way as pharmacists working with human medications. This includes providing you with
Patient Information Sheets customized for animal health that describe in detail how the medication should be given, storage suggestions, possible side effects to watch for, drug and food interactions, generic equivalents, and more.
Do you offer generic medications?
Yes. We offer a complete list of approved generic medications which can offer you a considerable cost savings. Ask your veterinarian to include in his/her prescription the medication desired "or generic equivalent." If a generic alternative is available for the medication requested, we will gladly fill the prescription with the lower cost generic equivalent.
Can you write a prescription for my pet?
No, only the veterinarian that personally examines your pet can write a prescription for your pet, since he or she is the only person who truly knows your pet and your pet's health condition.
Drs. Foster & Smith endorses the American Veterinary Medical Association policy statement that drug therapy should only be initiated by an attending veterinarian in the context of a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship.
Internet or mail order pharmacies that offer to have a "staff" veterinarian prescribe without examining your pet or offer to sell prescription medications without a valid prescription jeopardize your pet's health and violate the law.
Our veterinarians and pharmacists are here to work with your veterinarian to ensure your pet receives the best possible treatment, and to give our customers a convenient source of prescription medications at the lowest possible cost.
My veterinarian advised me to only fill my prescription at a licensed pharmacy. Are you a "licensed pharmacy?"
Yes we are. Our Wisconsin Pharmacy license number is 8266-042; we are also
licensed nationwide. Verification of licensure may be obtained by contacting the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing (phone: 608-266-2112, or on the web at www.drl.wi.gov).
Can prescriptions be filled by someone other than my veterinarian?
Yes. Wisconsin law permits a veterinarian or a licensed pharmacist to fill a prescription written by another licensed veterinarian. Upon your request, your veterinarian should provide you with a written prescription - or call in your prescription to our pharmacist for you.
The American Veterinary Medical Association Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics state that veterinarians should "honor client requests to prescribe rather than dispense a drug. In some states, this is a legal requirement.
How do you handle pet insurance claims?
Our pharmacy staff will be happy to work with you to fill out insurance forms that you send to us, provide you with a pharmacist's signature if required, or give you dual receipts if you need them. We will also be able to answer your insurance company's questions and discuss medication alternatives that your insurance company covers.
