While this is a good first food for all new-born fish from egg layers to live bearing, I find it essential for the ultra-small rainbow fish. While they need infusoria as a starter once they are free swimming, I find that frozen baby brine shrimp makes for an early transition food. The small cubes from Hikari makes for efficient use. And the Hikari name translates into high quality. It's a great product for neophyte or casual or unanticpated breeder like myself.

It is very hard to find frozen baby brine shrimp. It was available and my baby freshwater angelfish were able to eat this as soon as they were free-swimming. It is not always easy to keep up with brine shrimp hatcheries and sometimes, they just don't produce. This filled in the gaps from time to time and the angelfish prospered with no delay in their development.

These were what initially prompted me to make my frozen fish food order, as I have angelfish fry and I was hoping I could cut back on hatching live baby brine shrimp and just feed frozen ones instead. Given the high price of this Hikari product (one of the most expensive frozen foods you offer) I was expecting a quality product, but I was highly disappointed when I went to feed my fish. The amount of brine shrimp compared to water is exceedingly minimal. MOST of the cube is just frozen water, I can't believe that brine shrimp is listed as the first ingredient! It would probably take the entire 1.75 oz package to equal the amount of baby brine shrimp that you could get by hatching 1 tsp. of eggs. I refuse to feed any more of these frozen baby brine shrimp to my fish, I could tell my water quality suffered (got very cloudy) after just feeding a few cubes, and I would probably need to go through 15 cubes for a single decent meal for my fry. I expected better from Hikari; I'm going to stick with hatching my own baby brine shrimp.
