The Thermo-Pond De-Icer 3.0 is designed to keep open a vent hole in the ice to release harmful gases from underneath. If you allow your pond to completely freeze over during the winter months, the harmful gases produced by fish waste and plant decay cannot escape the ice. These trapped gases eventually build up to levels which are deadly for your costly fish and plants.
Please note: You will not see a large circle of open water surrounding your Thermo-Pond De-Icer. The unit melts the ice directly beneath it, then allows toxic gases to escape through the vent hole from within its center. Do not assume that it is not working properly if there is no open water encircling the unit.
Thermo-Pond De-Icer is recommended for ponds up to 1,000 gallons. Use an additional unit for each additional 1,000 gallons of water. Also, use an additional Thermo-Pond De-Icer if your pond requires extra gas exchange due to excessive plant decay or large quantities of fish under ice.
Instructions
Simply plug in your Thermo-Pond De-Icer and float it in your pond dome side up. You should begin to use your Thermo-Pond De-Icer when your pond has iced over. If the ice on your pond is more than 2" thick, drill a hole with an ice auger and place Thermo-Pond De-Icer over the hole. If the ice is less than 2" thick, place Thermo-Pond De-Icer directly on the ice and it will melt its way through. Do NOT chop through the ice in smaller ponds, as the resulting shockwaves can damage or kill fish. Always make safety your top priority - NEVER walk on thin ice. Try to position your Thermo-Pond De-Icer within an arm's reach of shore to avoid walking on the ice. Remove snow and ice from the top of the Thermo-Pond De-Icer.
After the winter season, wipe your Thermo-Pond De-Icer with a damp cloth and store in a clean, dry place. Always inspect your Thermo-Pond De-Icer before using. If the cord or plastic housing have cracks, do not use the unit.
