For a few weeks each year, my yard is inundated by masses of hungry gold finches that devour thistle at an incredible pace. This year as I was about to run out of it, I found a misplaced bag from Drs. Foster & Smith. It was 1 year old and unopened. I figured it would be stale. Much to my surprise, I opened it to find the BEST and FRESHEST thistle I ever seen (or smelled). The aroma was almost "nutty." Unlike the thistle I have purchased elsewhere, the seeds were "plump," black, and somewhat glossy. I was VERY impressed - as were the finches. I am making a note to purchase all of my thistle from the Drs.
I have two huge feeders and fill them with nothing but Nyjer Thistle Seed because that is what the Goldfinches in my area WANT. I get about 50 Goldfinches at a time - it's crazy sometimes that I get so many birds, but they really love this seed. My recommendation is to get a feeder that holds the seed well.
