Aquarium substrate for mud refugiums, macroalgae & mangroves
*
Ideal growing media for marine aquarium plants and algae
*
Contains live marine bacteria to support aquarium bio-filtration
The ideal substrate for refugiums, CaribSea Refugium Mineral Mud supplies trace elements, iodine, minerals, and nutrients, helping create a beneficial environment for aquarium food such as copepods, burrowing worms, decapods, and other sump organisms. CaribSea Refugium Mineral Mud can also help boost your refugium's filtration, as it supports many types of nitrifying bacteria.
Similar to varied sand in texture, CaribSea Refugium Mineral Mud includes marine bacteria, organic rich clay, iodine and chelated-element rich substrate, and super-fine aragonite organic acids. 1 gallon.

Directions for Use
For mud filters, empty jar into filter, then mix slightly, and add water (a "cap" of approximately 1/2 to 1 inch of live or dry aragonite sand is suggested). Wait 2-3 days, then begin pumps, and allow system to clear water (may take 1-2 days). Then add macro-algae, sea grasses, or mangroves. Allow tank to cycle, then add fish and corals into main tank. If using Mineral Mud in main tank, mix into a small area where you intend to plant your macro-algae, sea grasses, or mangroves. Do not cover the entire tank bottom. Run pumps for a day or two until water clears, and then add plants.
NOTE: This substrate contains marine organics, and was created to mimic coastal marine mangrove environments. It is designed to reach anaerobic conditions within an inch of the substrate/water interface. Once established, avoid disturbing the bed.
General Information
CaribSea Refugium Mineral Mud is a unique blend of sediments that duplicate tropical fringing coastal mangrove environments. Mineral Mud particles are in a size range compatible with soft, burrowing infaunal, macro animal assemblages. Ideal for mud refugiums, sea grasses, macro-algae, and mangroves, Mineral Mud provides a variety of trace elements plus calcium, strontium, iron, sulfur and free carbon. In addition, Mineral Mud contains live marine bacteria to complete the tropical ecosystem.
Refugiums, small aquariums that either sit next to or hang onto an existing saltwater or reef aquarium, are used by a growing number of aquarists to continually cycle water into and out of the existing tank.
A growing trend in the marine hobby is the belief that a reef aquarium should mimic wild ecosystems as much as possible. This means simulating the food sources, biological filtration, lighting spectrums, and water movement found in nature.
Spanning the most basic to the most advanced applications, a seemingly mundane piece of equipment, a sump, can provide numerous benefits, most important of which is improved water conditions.
Determining how much substrate to buy for your new aquarium depends on the size and shape of your tank, as well as the depth of the substrate bed you wish to achieve. Another factor is the type of aquascaping structure you're planning.
