Lafeber's Avi-Cakes Parrot (12 oz) 4.8 5 33 33

Bird loves it! This product is great as a treat. My cockatiel loves it and I want to eat it too, it smells so good! Also, it lasts a long time in the package without getting stale. May 16, 2013

This product is what our rescue companion bird came with. She eats what I cook for her as a suppliment but this is her primary source of nutrition. We've tried other products only to come back to the Avi Cakes because that's what makes her happy. It's good for her too. I especially wish to thank Drs. Forster and Smith for carrying this product as their prices are more affordable than the local pet supply stores, as a matter of fact most of them don't carry it and if they do I couldn't afford to keep feeding my pets favorite food to her. how do I know My conure is eating enough avicakes? I also have pellets

I have witnessed her eating the pellets I have changed to. It only took a few days. She is only 5 months old. She was hatched on Nov 29 2010 and I got her mid February 2011. I have had her a few months and I transitioned to pellets after witnessing her eat them alomg with avi-cakes. She goes right for the avi-cakes and consumes quite a bit. I feed her up on her play area and crush them a little. She holds chunks of it and I do this so she isn't dropping a bunch to the bottom. She has now a bowl full of pellets and I feel fairly comfortable along with fresh foods that she is getting enuf. How can i know she has or is consuming enuf of each?

My green cheek conure is the only one of my birds who will eat pellets along with Avi-cakes and fresh food. She leaves about 3/4 of a teaspoon of dust - on top of the uneaten pellets - every time she eats. She's 6 years old, weighs 60 grams and is in perfect health. I don't know if that is considered normal but she seems to be doing well.

One square of Avi-cakes is a meal. If she is eating 3 squares a day and some pellets she is doing fine. I feed the 3 AVI-CAKES and supplement some of whatever I am eating just so she thinks she is getting some of mine. Mashed potatoes, corn, peas etc. If you want to just feed pellets use the avi-cake as a treat.

Thank you for your question. I forwarded it to our in-house veterinarians, and this is the message they sent back:

Since each bird’s metabolism, exercise level, etc., is different, it is not possible to tell you how much specifically to feed your conure. The best way to determine if your bird is eating the appropriate amount of food is to monitor your bird’s weight. First, I would take your bird to an avian veterinarian and have her examined and weighed. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you if your bird is at an ideal weight or needs to gain or lose weight. Then, you can purchase a bird scale (that weighs in grams) and weigh your bird every 2 weeks. It is best to weigh the bird at the same time of day each time.

Pelleted foods are recommended as the mainstay of a good bird diet, always adding in fresh vegetables. Since your conure seems to enjoy them so much, small pieces of avicakes would make a good foraging treat. Now is a great time to encourage that behavior in your young bird.

Any of the ones suitable for a conure or a cockatiel should be OK - usually it is the size of the contents in the cakes. You could use the ones for larger birds too - they will break them down anyway...
