Rated 4 out of 5 by civicman Great light for many reasons above others, with one small problem
I did not purchase this light from Foster/Smith, but I wanted to comment on it anyways. The light is built very sturdy and I love the fact that it is super low profile and gets really close to the top of the tank: way closer than any other LED light I have searched for. Because it sits so close to the tank top, you get minimal light bleed out into the room and onto the wall. If your tank is in a living room, and depending on your tank style, you wont really see much of any light bleed out the side and blind your eyes. The adjustable legs are rugged plastic and slide great and are not flimsy at all. The top of the unit gets warm during operation however nothing to worry about. Power cord is super long and way longer than most people need. The power supply block is located mid-cord so the portion that plugs into the wall is a small normal lamp two-prong socket thus making it easier to plug the unit into tight spaces. I did see green algae grow faster when the tank becomes unbalenced but that is not the lights fault. I have Staurognye Repens and Dwarf Sag Carpet plants and they seem to like the light, so I think there is enough light reaching the bottom of a 20 gallon tall tank. Light is very bright and seems to be right color spectrum for good plant growth. The dimmer function is controlled by holding in the power button and then the light will dim up and down.
Now here are some bad points to mention...
Fluval must have been having a bad day when they designed the power button. They made a button that is completely water proof and in doing so it usually does not work right. If you push the button at any given time, it might work, or it might not. If you plan to put this on a timer this is a minimal problem but otherwise it stinks. I have read other reviews of this light elsewhere and people have similar problems. I might have gotten a bad light, but i suspect Fluval needs to re-design the switch. I do not care if a switch is waterproof; just make the darn thing work! If Fluval can fix the switches, I would love the light and give it 5 stars.
