Provides protection against seven diseases in one convenient vaccine. Vetera Gold is used as an aid in the prevention of diseases caused by Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis, (EEE and WEE), and West Nile Virus, incorporating the 2005 WNV horse isolate that protects against the strain most likely to infect horses today. It also aids in prevention of tetanus; and as an aid in the reduction of respiratory disease caused by Equine Herpes virus type 1 (EHV-1), Equine Herpes virus type 4 (EHV-4), and Equine Influenza virus types A2 North American and A2 Eurasian, including the Ohio/2003, Kentucky/95, and Newmarket/2/93 influenza strains as recommended by the Expert Surveillance Panel on Equine Influenza. The Vetera Gold vaccine contains killed viruses and inactivated bacterin toxoid. The duration of immunity against Equine Influenza is at least 6 months and against West Nile Virus at least 12 months.

Vetera vaccines are formulated using a proprietary exclusive Ultrafil™ Purification Technology, which removes most of the extraneous proteins. This makes it possible to include more antigens in a 1-mL dose and enables the horse's immune system to focus more directly on the relevant antigens. As a result of Ultrafil Purification Technology, less of each individual antigen is required in the Vetera Gold vaccines to generate an efficacious immune response.

In accordance with federal packaging regulation 9CFR Part 112, vaccines may only be shipped in the manufacturer's original, unopened container. This regulation helps ensure vaccine quality and consistency in labeling. Administration and Dosage: Shake well before use. Using aseptic technique, inoculate horses intramuscularly with a 1 mL dose. Administer a second 1 mL dose intramuscularly in 3-4 weeks using a different injection site. Revaccinate annually and prior to anticipated exposure with a single 1mL intramuscular dose.

Storage: Store at 35°-45°F (2-7° C). Protect from freezing.

A.	Vaccination may be the only way to help protect horses from some diseases, preventing disease causes less stress than recovery from infection, and many diseases cause permanent damage or death.

A.	You should always store the vaccines that you buy in the refrigerator. For best results, do not take them out of the refrigerator until you are ready to administer them.

A.

If you are not going to be at the delivery point in the summer, leave a cooler with ice packs outside the door, with instructions for the delivery person to place the vaccines in the cooler. In the winter, a cooler may also be used to insulate the vaccine and prevent it from freezing. When you place your order, let the operator know you are doing this so we can also place instructions for the delivery person.

Could widespread outbreaks of West Nile virus infection occur again in the future?

A.

Yes. Vaccination has been successful in controlling this disease in our horse populations. Relaxed attitudes toward vaccination, as well as changes in the dynamics of mosquito populations, could result in future outbreaks. For example, the recently identified white-nose bat syndrome has depleted the populations of bat colonies in the northeast part of the US by up to 90%. Bats feed on mosquitoes, and their population reduction has raised concerns about the potential for increased mosquitoes in these areas and the reoccurrence of West Nile virus infection.

A.	The introduction of the West Nile virus (genotype NY99) to North America in 1999 was followed by 2 years of relatively low transmission as the virus spread down the Atlantic seaboard. However, in 2002, a new strain of the virus emerged (genotype WN02) that rapidly spread throughout North America, displacing the old strain by 2005.
