Recommended for the vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of Potomac Horse Fever (equine monocytic ehrlichiosis) caused by Ehrlichia risticii. Equine Potomavac is a liquid suspension of inactivated E. risticii, the microbe that causes Potomac Horse Fever. Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is a serious and deadly disease that continues to puzzle researchers. It has been recognized as a serious equine disease for nearly 30 years, yet details about it are still being discovered - including how the disease is transmitted. PHF has a complex life cycle that is believed to involve bacteria, flukes, snails and aquatic insects, such as caddisflies and mayflies. Annual vaccination just before peak insect hatch (mid- to late summer to early fall) with Potomavac can deliver reliable protection against this disease. Potomavac contains Ehrlichia risticii bacterin. This vaccine may be safely used in horses as young as 3 months of age. Use with syringes made especially for horses.
