Improve Pond Water Quality with Chemical Filter Media
Chemical filtration is the simplest way to remove potentially dangerous pollutants from koi and goldfish ponds. There is a variety of chemical filter media available for convenient use with pond filters. Most chemical media remove specific pollutants from the water column while others are combined to create multi-functional chemical filter media that simplify removal of multiple pollutants.
Zeolite
Zeolite is a mineral-based media with porous composition. It differs from other chemical filter media in that it absorbs and removes specifically ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds from freshwater aquariums and ponds. As an added benefit, many forms of zeolite rapidly reduce large concentrations of ammonia from the water column for fast-acting relief. Some forms can also be soaked in saltwater to recharge their absorptive abilities for reuse within your filter. It is available in both natural and synthetic forms. While primarily used for freshwater aquariums, more pond keepers are becoming aware of the benefits of zeolite ammonia-removing filter media for their pond koi and goldfish.
