by AdrianM Very effective algae control in a large, heavily stocked, marine tank.
I use 4,500 ml of pearls Ina commercial Reef Octopus reactor, and my 1,500 gallon marine system is almost algae free after 3 months. This system is stocked with 8 large angels, a 5 foot tesalata eel, 3 large triggers, 5 large tangs, etc...
Until using the pearls, I relied on hundreds of snails to clean up the algae. The problem with the snails was, they almost always introduced parasites, and lead to copper treatment. Since the pearls, no more snails.
Note that you will need to build the volume of pearls slowly, as my first attempt (introducing 2700 ml all at once) led to a severe bacteria bloom. Other than that, I strongly endorse this product.

First off running pearls in a planted tank is a bad idea? why because pearls compete for phosphates. phosphates are what keep plants living and growing. opposite of corals
please note that pearls work well when they are in constant motion in the right reactor used for the right purpose.
what is that purpose and why?
pearls (aka biopellets) work by creating a culture on the pellet itself that uses nitrates and phosphates to consume the very thing in which the pearls are made out of. once consumed, remains are placed back in the water colum and skimmed out via a protien skimmer. this helps to keep water very very clean.
the pros and cons?
All corals are different some love clean water some love dirty water( nutrient rich) so are np pearls right for your tank? do you have alot of lps, which favor dirty water? if so then im sorry the answer is no. you would be better off with a phosphate reactor. Do you have an sps tank where clean water is crucial? if so then yes
my experince so far in using pearls is that your lps will take a hit. i had to move my acans, favias and scolymia out of the tank. zoanthids soft corals and sps all are fine. ive been using these pearls for 5 months now and my tank has never been happier. sps have alot more color now as well. hope this helps

We purchased this for our 75gallon planted angel tank. The reactor is attached to return of canister filter. At first the pearls seemed to be working but after about a week they all stuck together and reduced flow from filter.
