Helpful Refugium Tips
To maintain a healthy refugium, it is important to keep the glass in the Illumination Window clean to prevent light from being blocked by encrusting algae. In addition, macroalgae growing in the refugium should be periodically harvested to allow fresh algae to grow. When the macroalgae is harvested, nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate absorbed by the algae are exported from the system. Failure to remove excess macroalgae on a regular basis allows the nutrients to be recycled back into the system where they can contribute to the growth of nuisance algae. On average, two-thirds of the macroalgae in the refugium should be harvested monthly.
