Other factors affecting pH: Factors that drive pH down in an aquarium include a tight fitting lid or canopy and overstocking. Both increase the accumulation of dissolved carbon dioxide (a gaseous metabolic by-product) which is acidic in water.

High pH (in excess of 8.3) can be caused by the overdosing of calcium hydroxide (kalkwasser) or very intense lighting.
