Introduction
Pet training is easy with your new Pro Trainer Plus, the sonic behavioral trainer. Like a dog whistle, it uses high pitched tones to reinforce commands and augment the training process. It uses three positive "YES" tones to reinforce specific behaviors such as sit, heel, and come. An irritating negative tone is also provided to eliminate barking, chewing, jumping, and other unwanted behaviors. The Pro Trainer Plus has been ergonomically designed for a slim, comfortable hand held feel. It is easy to operate with LED indicators provided for each tone. It is guaranteed to simplify and quicken the training process.
Training Dogs
The theory of training behind the Pro Trainer Plus centers on the dog learning the circumstances under which its behavior is OK and the circumstances when it is not. The most basic elements they must learn are the signals for "YES" and "NO".
The Pro Trainer Plus is a training tool designed to provide a consistent stimulus for these "YES" and "NO" instructions. The trainer provides four different training tones, three positive "YES" tones and one negative "NO" tone.
Using the SIT, HEEL, and COME tones
Each positive tone is associated with a specific behavior, such as SIT, HEEL, or COME. The positive tone should be played along with a verbal command and a reward for exhibiting the desired behavior. For example, in training the dog to sit, the "SIT" tone should be played along with the verbal command from you. The dog should then be gently maneuvered into the sitting position by applying pressure to the hind section. A food reward should be given along with an encouraging "good dog" affirmation and the "SIT" tone should be replayed.
The process should be repeated several times daily until your pet no longer requires physical manipulation to sit. The training process should continue until your pet appears comfortable with the process, and then the food reward may be eliminated. The fully trained dog will respond to the tone and verbal command together whenever the SIT command is given. Use the trainer in the same manner for other training basics, such as HEEL and COME.
Using the "NO" tone
Depressing the red "NO" button produces a loud tone at a frequency outside of the human hearing range, but well within the range of most dogs and cats. The "NO" tone is also pulsed on and off to distinguish it from the positive tones. It is normal for humans to hear a clicking sound when depressing the "NO" button. This sound is not the actual training tone heard by your pet. It is the low frequency response made by the speaker each time the training tone is pulsed on.
Some animals may find the high-frequency "NO" tone inherently irritating, but most animals will show little initial reaction to the tone and will have to be taught that the tone is a punishment. This is accomplished by using the stern verbal command "NO" each time the button is used and by assuming a commanding posture while pointing the unit directly at the pet.
Even though punishment is undoubtedly the most misunderstood and misused technique for training pets, it can be extremely effective if properly used. First, it is important to understand that it is the problem behavior that needs to be punished and not the animal.
Punishment is ONLY effective when your pet is "caught in the act". Many owners punish their pet by taking him to the site of the misdeed and then yelling at or swatting him. The idea is that the animal knows what he did and will not do it again. This is retribution, not punishment and is ineffective and confusing to the pet. Your pet cannot connect what happens now with what they did some time ago. The "NO" tone, therefore, should be played while your pet is performing the unwanted behavior. The more immediate and consistent the punishment is, the more effective it will be, so it is important to keep the trainer with you at all appropriate times and remember to use the firm command "NO" with the negative tone.
