Setting up the Filter
Choose a suitable site for your new filter where power supply can be safely run to the filter and be adequately protected against damage from garden equipment, children and animals.
Position the filter so it is secure and cannot fall into the water. Make sure the selected site is flat, level and well away from flammable items.
You may choose to partially bury the filter. Note: The outlets should be above water level. Also, if you partially bury the filter, you will not be able to use the sludge drain unless a 1" hose is fitted securely to sludge drain and sludge cap is fitted to the other end of the hose.
Make sure the water supply hose can be run from your water pump.
If the site is by the edge of the water, check that the outlets are over the pond or the start of the waterfall.
If the site is away from the edge of the water, check that all sections of the outlet pipes will run down hill to the pond or the start of the waterfall.
Make sure the filter outlets are not feeding back close to the filter inlet.
Check to see that if the filter overflows or leaks, the water will not cause an electrical or other danger.
Plumbing the Filter
Choose a suitable size to run from your pump to the filter. Secure with hose clips.
Fit inlet and outlets with supplied gaskets and screws.
Firmly insert Sludge Plug into sludge outlet.
If the filter is by the edge of the water: Place the outlets over the edge of the pond.
If the filter is away from the edge of the water: Connect flexible hose to outlets and secure with hose clip. Note: All parts of the outlet hose must run down hill - If any section runs up hill, the outlet will not work. Secure the free ends of the hoses above or below the water level.
Rinse the Fish Mate SUPRA filter media in a bucket of pond water before placing evenly into the Bio Chamber.
Check to see if the filter is level. Turn the pump on and check to see that the water does not overflow or leak.
Operation
The filter is now is now ready to run. The filter should run 24 hours a day through the year, except when there is a risk of the water freezing. The water should start to clear in 2 to 3 weeks, but fill clarification may take 1 to 2 months. If the pond water is very green, a water change should be made before starting the filter.
Maintenance
Foam
When the foams appear clogged, clean as follows:
Turn off the power to pump and the filter.
Lift the Bio Lid and remove the foams.
Clean by squeezing in a bucket of pond water. This will preserve beneficial bacteria.
Refit the foams with the two Fine Foams adjacent to the SUPRA bio media and close the Bio Lid.
Turn on the power to the pump and filter.
Check that the water is not overflowing from the filter.
The performance of the foam will deteriorate over time and should be replaced annually.
Bio filter medium SUPRA
The performance of the SUPRA will slowly deteriorate over time and should be replaced every two years. The bio filter should only be cleaned if heavily silted as follows:
Turn off the power to pump and the filter.
Remove the media tray and rinse SUPRA bio media in a bucket of pond water. Note: The SUPRA bio media should never be cleaned in tap water as the beneficial bacteria will be killed.
Replace the media tray and turn on the power to the pump and filter.
Check to see that water is not overflowing from the filter.
Sludge Removal
Sludge should only need removing once per year. In some circumstances, however, the sludge may need to be removed more often as follows:
Turn off the power to pump and the filter.
Unscrew the three screws on the UV lid and remove the lid and media tray.
Clean out the UV Chamber and the sludge collection area under the media tray with a brush and a water hose. Remove the Sludge Plug to facilitate drainage.
Replace all items.
Turn on the power to the pump and filter.
Check to see that water is not overflowing from the filter.
UV Replacement
The lamp UV output reduces over time. After 12 months of UV operation, the UV lamp should be replaced. Please note that the UV lamps will continue to give off violet light well after the UV light that kills the algae has stopped. It is recommended that UV lamps are replaced at the start of the summer so that they are at their most efficient when the need is greatest. Note: When replacing the UV lamp, new lamp gaskets must be used.
