Redesigned power filters simplify maintenance and improve aquarium water quality. Multi-stage filters boast innovative new features including an external motor assembly for engineered water flow that maximizes filter performance and aquarium oxygenation. Bio-Scrubber insert ensures excellent biological filtration and reusable clamshell filter frame functions as a no-touch, drip-free carrier for fast and convenient filter media change. Features Timestrip technology to indicate when to replace multi-density carbon-filled filter cartridge.
Features:
SilentFilter™ Technology - The Whisper EX is ready to go, right out of the box. Simply adjust the extension tube, place the filtration system on your aquarium and plug it in. The submerged motor begins filtering water immediately. No priming required. Silent operation.
Timestrip™ Technology - Accurately determine when your carbon filter has expired with Timestrip technology. The patented technology allows you to see, at a glance, when it's time to replace your filter. The health of your fish depends on regular filter changes to remove toxins and other harmful impurities.
Multi-Stage Filtration - Unlike other aquarium filters, the Whisper EX directs water through multiple layers of floss to remove more particles. The coarse floss removes large particles while the tan multi-density floss removes fine particles. The carbon inside eliminates odors, discoloration, and most importantly, harmful toxins. The Bio-Scrubber removes ammonia and nitrite that are deadly to your fish.
Carbon Filter Carrier - The new filter carrier holds the filter - and the drips - so you don't have to. After discarding the old filter and inserting the new one, the carrier easily drops back into place within the filtration system.
Carbon Filter Access Door - Allows easy access to the carbon filter carrier for fast, clean, and easy filter changes.

Installing your Filtration System
Attach strainer (and extension tube, if necessary) so that strainer will be no closer than two inches to the aquarium gravel once the system is hanging on the aquarium frame.
Hang system on aquarium frame. Be sure aquarium water is at or above the "minimum water level" indicated on the system's motor assembly.
Once the system is properly in place, plug filtration system into outlet being sure to arrange a drip loop with the power cord,
Squeeze "Start button" on Timestrip and place it in compartment on filter hood so that the white area shows through the window. The bottom of the white timeline will darken approximately 30 seconds after activation. Important: If bottom of timeline does not darken, then the Timestrip has not been activated and you need to squeeze the button again.
Maintaining your Filtration System Changing the Carbon Filter
When the Timestrip in the filtration system's hood has turned completely red, it is time to change your filter. Note: It is important to change your carbon filter when the Timestrip indicates it is time to do so because that means the carbon in the filter has reached its capacity for removing toxins.
Open the system's carbon filter access door and lift carbon filter carrier.
Hold carrier above doorway for a few seconds to drain water. Then invert carrier to a 45-degree angle and carry to waste bin.
Squeeze carrier handle to drop dirty carbon filter into waste bin.
Insert clean carbon filter into carrier (tan-colored floss should face the front). Drop carrier into system and close filter access door.
Squeeze the start button on a fresh Timestrip and replace old strip in compartment on filter hood so that the white area shows through the window. The bottom of the white timeline will darken approximately 30 seconds after activation. Important: If bottom of timeline does not darken, then the Timestrip has not been activated and you need to squeeze the button again.
Cleaning the Bio-Scrubber™ Note: Do not dispose of the Bio-Scrubber unless it is damaged.
The Bio-Scrubber is a permanent part of the filtration system. It is not meant to be replaced or disturbed. If your Bio-Scrubber should ever become clogged as evidenced by restricted water flow or water flowing over the top of the Bio-Scrubber, then follow the procedure below.
Remove the system's hood and remove the Bio-Scrubber.
Gently rinse the Bio-Scrubber in a bucket with aquarium water. Do not use soap or any other cleaner. Note: Do not remove the beneficial bacteria growing on the Bio-Scrubber. These bacteria turn toxins into harmless compounds.
Reinsert Bio-Scrubbers and snap system hood back into place.
Troubleshooting
If the system stops or doesn't start after a power interruption:
Unplug the system and lift it out of the water.
Remove the strainer, extension tubes, impeller cover, and magnetic impeller assembly.
Examine all parts for debris that could cause blockages.
Remove debris from strainer, extension tubes, and impeller cover by running under cool water.
Remove any material that may have twisted around the impeller shaft with a needle or tweezers.
Hold the assembly by the ends of its axis and try to spin the magnet. If the magnet does not spin freely, rinse it under a jet of tap water to "unlock" it.
Hold the magnet and try to spin the impeller blades in the opposite direction. If the impeller does not spin freely, rinse it under a jet of tap water to "unlock" it.
If rinsing does not free up the magnet or impeller blades, replace the entire assembly.
Re-assemble the system and place it back on the aquarium.

Unlike natural aquatic systems, toxic compounds accumulate quickly in an enclosed aquarium system. Without a natural means to efficiently remove these toxic compounds or wastes, conventional aquariums are dependent upon filtration devices.
There are three basic types of aquarium filter media and each performs a different job to help keep a clean and healthy aquarium environment. This article gives a basic overview of the three main types of filter media.
