What is Vetmedin?
Vetmedin (Pimobendan) is in a class of heart treatments named "inodilators" used in the management of certain types of congestive heart failure in dogs. These medications increase the heart muscle's ability to pump blood.

Who is it for?
Dogs. The safety of pimobendan has not been evaluated in dogs younger than 6 months of age.

What are the benefits?

* Intended to increase life expectancy in dogs with heart failure
* Reduces stress on the heart muscle
* A new clinical approach vs. other medications

How does Vetmedin work?
Vetmedin increases the ability of the heart muscle to contract and also open up the blood vessels taking blood to and away from the heart. This reduces the heart's workload as it pumps blood throughout the dog's body.

Specifically used for the management of the signs of mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure in dogs.

Is there a generic equivalent available?
No

How is it given?
Vetmedin should be given by mouth. Unless otherwise recommended by your veterinarian, the total daily dose should be divided into two portions. The portions should be administered 12 hours apart (i.e., morning and evening). The tablets are scored and dosage should be provided to the nearest half tablet increment.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

This medication should only be given to the pet for which it was prescribed.

What results can I expect?
Vetmedin will not cure heart disease, but can be helpful in reducing some of the symptoms. It may take several weeks to see an improvement in your pet's condition.

What form(s) does it come in?
