Assembly Instructions for Biosteps 10
Insert Outlet Fitting through upper hole of the Biosteps 10 (the side with a single opening). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over the threads. Hand tighten nut. Do not overtighten.
Insert Drain Fitting through lower hole of the Biosteps 10 (the side with 2 openings). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over threads. Hand tighten nut, do not overtighten.
Insert clear, Universal Hose Fitting through the upper hole of the Biosteps 10 Filter (the side with 2 openings). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over the threads. Hand tighten nut. Do not overtighten.
Insert Matala filter media into the Filter Body in the following order: Green (2), Blue (2), Black (3), and Gray (1).
Insert Partitioning Screen in the final position to prevent Matala filter media from blocking the Outlet Pipe.
Snap the lid onto the filter.
Connect pump to Biosteps filter and check for leaks.

Insert Drain Fitting through lower hole of the Biosteps 10 (the side with 2 openings). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over threads. Hand tighten nut, do not overtighten.
Insert clear, Universal Hose Fitting through the upper hole of the Biosteps 10 Filter (the side with 2 openings). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over the threads. Hand tighten nut. Do not overtighten.
Attach UVC to Biosteps. Insert clear, Universal Hose Fitting through the upper hole of the Biosteps 10 Filter (the side with 2 openings). Place O-ring on inside of filter and over the threads. Hand tighten nut. Do not overtighten.
Align and insert MPT of the UV Clarifier into the female thread of the clear Universal Hose Fitting. Hand tighten (clockwise) to secure UV Clarifier onto the Universal Hose Fitting. Make sure there is a watertight connection between the UV Clarifier and the Universal Hose Fitting (you may need to twist the Universal Hose Fitting until it is completely tight and flush with the UV Clarifier.
Insert Matala filter media into the Filter Body in the following order: Green (2), Blue (2), Black (3), and Gray (1).
Insert Partitioning Screen in the final position to prevent Matala filter media from blocking the Outlet Pipe.
Snap the lid onto the filter.
Connect UVC bulb to the Lamp Socket in the UVC Cap. Be sure to properly align the Bulb Pins.
Carefully insert the UVC Bulb into the Quartz Sleeve Tube and screw the UVC Cap onto the UVC Housing.
Connect pump to Biosteps filter and check for leaks.
Filter Startup
Your Biosteps filter is now assembled. Place your filter close to your water garden in a shaded spot. Choose a location that allows easy access for convenient maintenance.
Place the filter on a solid, level surface. Make sure the Filter Outlet can function properly without obstruction.
Connect the hose from the water pump to the Filter Inlet.
Attach a length of hosing to the Filter Outlet, making sure this return line is placed in your water garden.
Check for leaks. Make sure the O-rings are positioned correctly. If needed, use Teflon tape on the Threads of the Fittings.
Note: To ensure optimal filter performance (biological filtration), it is imperative to maintain water flow through the unit. If there is no water flow through the unit for more than 2 hours, the oxygen level in the Filter Body will drop and may result in the loss of beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms.
Filter Maintenance
Maintenance frequency will depend on many factors including:
Fish load and feeding rate.
Season and water temperature.
Established age of the pond.
Level of existing sediment/organic waste material.
In general, filter maintenance is only needed when the Matala Filter Mats are clogged. Water will begin to flow over the filter mats rather than through them.
Note: Turn off all electrical equipment before performing filter maintenance.
Remove lid.
Gently shake Matala pads up and down in the Filter to loosen debris particles.
Unplug Bottom Drain Plug.
A 1-1/2" drain hose can be attached to the Bottom Drain to direct wastewater away.
To prevent the loss of beneficial bacteria, do not clean Matala filter mats too vigorously.
