Vaccines for Healthy Horses, Ponies & Other Equines: Fluvac Innovator® EHV-4/1 by Fort Dodge

For vaccination of healthy horses against the infectious respiratory disease Equine Influenza caused by Type A₂ virus; and both strains of Rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 and EHV-4). Killed vaccine includes thimerosal, neomycin, and polymyxin B as preservatives. Pre-loaded single-dose syringe includes needle. *Administer intramuscularly (IM) only. Purchase two to use one as a booster.

*Residents of CT, DE, IL, MN, NH, NJ, or NY, please ask your veterinarian for a prescription. NY residents may use a certificate of need.

Suggested use: Shake well. Use entire contents once opened. Aseptically inject horses with 1 ml intramuscularly and repeat the dose in 3 to 4 weeks. Administer annually thereafter.

Q.	What is Equine Rhinopneumonitis?
A.	Equine Rhinopneumonitis is caused by the equine herpesviruses EHV-1 and EHV-4. EHV-1 is the most virulent and can cause respiratory symptoms, abortion, foal death, and paralysis. EHV-4 causes respiratory symptoms similar to the common cold in humans and mostly affects young horses. Please see article on Equine Rhinopneumonitis for more information on this disease.

What is Equine Influenza?

A.

Equine Influenza is caused by a type A virus, which is related to (but not the same as) the organism that causes the flu virus in humans. This is a virus of the respiratory system that can be spread easily from horse to horse as a result of droplets released into the air when the infected horse coughs. It can also be spread via nasal discharge and from infected items such as brushes and combs. This disease is highly contagious. Q.	How should I store my vaccines once I receive them?
A.	You should always store the vaccines that you buy in the refrigerator. For best results, do not take them out of the refrigerator until you are ready to administer them.

I'm having my vaccines shipped by 1-day air. What other steps can I take to make sure that they stay cold but do not freeze?

A.

If you are not going to be at the delivery point, in the summer leave a cooler with ice packs outside the door with instructions for the delivery person to place the vaccines in the cooler. In the winter, a cooler may also be used to insulate the vaccine and prevent it from freezing. When you place your order, let the operator know you are doing this so we can also place instructions for the delivery person.
