QuickSeam Tape Installs in Six Easy Steps:
Overlap the adjoining Firestone EPDM sheets and place guide marks with crayon along the bottom panel.
Tack back the top sheet of EPDM and apply TPO QuickPrime with QuickScrubber tool.
Scrub both areas of EPDM using the QuickScrubber tool and TPO QuickPrime. Then wipe the area dry with enclosed wipes.
Follow the guide marks to align the QuickSeam Splice Tape along the membrane edge. Then apply uniform pressure along the seam.
Untack the top layer of the EPDM panel and remove the release paper from the QuickSeam Tape.
To complete the seam, apply uniform pressure to the seam area.
Detailed Installation Instructions for Firestone QuickSeam Tape Kit
Product Description:
Firestone QuickSeam Splice Tape is a means to field splice together adjacent sheets of EPDM membrane.
Seam Preparation and Construction:
Position the membrane sheets at the seam area by overlapping the adjacent sheets by 5 inches. Once the membrane is in place, mark the bottom sheet 1/2" to 3/4" from the edge of the top sheet every two to four feet using the included crayon. The marks will be used as guides to set the QuickSeam tape on the bottom sheet.
TIP: It will be helpful to weigh both sheets of membrane to prevent shifting of the sheets during the seaming operation. Make the seam on a flat, level substrate. Position the spliced membrane in place 24 hours after the splice has been completed.
Fold the top sheet of EPDM membrane back to expose the splicing surface of the EPDM.
TIP: It will be helpful to "tack" the top sheet membrane back using duct tape or small pieces of QuickSeam Tape. The tape for the "tack back" shall be kept hidden and not extend on the splicing surfaces.
Scrub the seaming area of both sheets of EPDM (from the edge of each sheet in six inch increments along the length of the seam area) using the QuickScrubber pad and handle and TPO Quick Prime. Press and twist the QuickScrubber pad into the handle so the pad remains on the handle. Saturate the pad with TPO QuickPrime and thoroughly scrub the seam area of the sheet with the saturated QuickScrubber pad and handle.
TIP: Allow the TPO QuickPrime to dry completely - approximately 15 minutes depending on ambient air temperature and weather conditions.
Install the QuickSeam Splice Tape after the primed area of the membrane has dried completely. Position the QuickSeam Splice Tape (with release paper facing up) by placing the release paper edge next to the marks on the bottom sheet applied in Step 1. Continue to place the tape by aligning the edge of the release paper with the marks, adjusting the alignment as necessary.
TIP: Immediately "set" the splice tape with the release paper in place with a dry QuickScrubber pad mounted on the QuickScrubber handle using long back and forth motions with heavy pressure. Heavy pressure is required to ensure the tape remains in place during removal of the release paper. This begins the "wet-in" process of the tape to the membrane and minimizes blisters forming in the tape. Do not use your hands for this - they do not offer uniform pressure.
Make the seam by un-tacking the top EPDM sheet and allowing it to fall freely over the release paper on the tape. The release paper on the tape must extend 1/2" past the seam edge. If the top membrane sheet exceeds past the release paper edge, it must be trimmed. Trim the top sheet using scissors to allow 1/4" to 1/2"of release paper to extend beyond the edge of the top sheet.
TIP: When the seam is longer than the length of the seam tape, the start of the new roll of seam tape must overlap a minimum of one inch. Follow this overlap with a liberal application of seam caulking at the tape overlap area to seal joints resulting from the overlap.
Remove the release paper from the splice tape by pulling at a 45 degree angle away from the seam at a steady pace. Keep the paper low to the membrane surface as it is removed and hold the seam area with one hand to prevent shifting of the seam during release paper removal.
TIP: After removal of the release paper, broom the top layer of the seam the entire distance of the seam to set the top sheet into the tape. An alternative to brooming is to use a dry QuickScrubber pad mounted on the QuickScrubber handle to set the top sheet into the tape. For both setting techniques, use gentle, smoothing motions perpendicular to the seam length starting at the back non-exposed edge of the seam, moving toward the seam step off. Do not use your hands for this step - they do not offer uniform pressure.
Roll the entire seam area with the supplied seam roller, first across the seam and then along the entire length of the seam
TIP: It is imperative that the seam be rolled with heavy pressure to ensure that the proper "wet in" of the tape to the membrane is achieved.
Precautions:
Do not remove QuickSeam Tape products from original containers until ready for use.
Keep the material out of direct sunlight until ready for application.
Do not allow tape to get wet or damaged.
Do not install over wet or damp membrane.
The scrubbed and cleaned membrane must be free of contaminants.
Do not subject seams to stress for a minimum of 24 hours. The 24 hour non-stressed period will allow the seam to build strength.
Make the seam on a flat, level substrate and then position the spliced membrane.
TPO QuickPrime is flammable. TPO QuickPrime is not approved for indoor application. Proper ventilation is required.
