How to Calculate Underlayment Size: To determine the necessary dimensions for the underlayment, start with the desired length, width, and depth of your pond. Then add twice the desired maximum depth to both the length and width. Include an additional 1-1/2 to 2 feet to each of these figures to provide enough overlap.

For example: For a finished pond that measures 7' long x 7' wide x 1 1/2 ft deep, you'll need a 12' x 12' piece of underlayment.

7 ft (length) + 3 ft (depth x2) + additional 2 ft = 12 ft Length
7 ft (width) + 3 ft (depth x2) + additional 2 ft = 12 ft Width

Tips on installing pond underlayment:
It is a good idea to use an underlayment under any lined pond to prevent punctures and leaks from developing. If your liner leaks, you will need to tear down your pond and start over. In the past old carpet, newspaper, felt, or even polyethylene bags have been used underneath the pond liner. However, commercial underlayment are now readily available, easy to use and install, and is the preferred product to use.

Make sure to remove all stones protruding materials because they can cause punctures in the liner. Putting a firmly-packed layer of sand about 2 inches deep beneath the underlayment provides additional protection against punctures or tears in the liner.

Remember to take your time and do it right the first time. Buy the best liner you can afford and don't forget the underlayment to protect the fragile lining.
