What is Optimmune?
Optimmune is an eye ointment that contains cyclosporine. It is used for the management of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS or dry eye). May also be prescribed for the management of inflammation in another eye condition called chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).

How does Optimmune work?
Optimmune decreases the inflammation associated with dry eye and keratitis and also increases the amount of tear production.

How is it given?
Remove any debris around the eye with a suitable nonirritating eye solution. When applying ointment, place one hand under and around your pet's chin and lift upward, so the pet's eyes are looking towards the ceiling. Pull down gently on the lower lid with a finger or thumb, depending upon which eye you are treating. Rest your other hand on top of the pet's head. Be sure the tip of the tube is pointed away from your pet's eye so if your pet jerks, the tube tip will not injure the eye.

Hold the tube of ointment about one inch from the eye and apply a short ribbon (1/4 inch) of ointment along the inner edge of the lower lid, starting at the inside corner of the eye. Rotate the tube when you reach the outer portion of the eye to help detach the ointment from the tube. Have your pet blink, and gently hold the eyelid shut. Gently massage the closed eyelid to disperse the ointment.

Take care not to touch the tip of the tube to the pet's eye, lids, or eyelashes. Do not touch the inside of the cap or tube tip with your fingers, as this will also contaminate the medication. Always wash your hands before and after applying this medication.

If you are applying more than one medication to the eye, allow five minutes between applications so one medication is not washed out by the next. Be sure not to interchange the caps of the medications.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

What results can I expect?
Optimmune will not cure KCS, but will help to decrease the symptoms. The best results are seen if the dry eye is treated early in the course of disease before scarring or permanent damage occurs. It may take a few weeks to achieve a maximum effect. If there is not improvement or the condition worsens, contact your veterinarian. Usually the KCS or CSK will need to be treated for the life of the animal. If Optimmune is discontinued the symptoms will reappear.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian while considering Optimmune?
Talk to your veterinarian about what type of outcome is expected. Have your veterinarian explain the other treatment options that may be available to treat your pet's condition. Have your veterinarian or staff show you how to administer the ointment. Ask if there are any precautions (especially if your pet's vision is hampered) or if there are other things you can do to help the healing process.

Notify your veterinarian of any other medications or supplements your pet is taking, and if your pet has had any reactions to previous medications.

What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once. This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

What is the most important information I should know?
Optimmune will not cure KCS, but will help decrease the symptoms. In most cases, Optimmune will need to be given for the life of the animal. Know how to properly give the medication. Optimmune needs to be given exactly as your veterinarian prescribes. If it is discontinued, the eye condition may worsen. Contact your veterinarian if your pet's eye worsens or does not improve during treatment.

Who should not take it?
Not for use in animals hypersensitive (allergic) to cyclosporine. The safety of this medication in puppies, or breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals (female animals nursing their young) has not been determined. Do not use in animals with viral or fungal infections of the eye. Successfully treat those conditions before using Optimmune.

What side effects may be seen when taking Optimmune?
Side effects associated with the use of Optimmune have not been reported. Ointments will blur your animal's vision for a few minutes after administration. Prevent your pet from bumping into things and becoming injured. If used in an infected eye, the infection may worsen.

How is it stored?
Store at room temperature (36-86°F) in a tight, light-resistant, childproof container. Keep out or reach of children and pets.

What should I do if I know of or suspect there has been an overdose?
If you know or suspect your pet has had an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately.

What should I avoid when giving my pet Optimmune?
Avoid using other medications in the eye unless prescribed by your veterinarian.
