What is Sulcralfate?
Sucralfate is an anti-ulcer medication used in the treatment of ulcers of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine.

Who is it for?
Sucralfate is for multiple species including dogs, cats, and horses.

What are the benefits?

* Coats ulcers in the digestive system and protects them from further damage from stomach acid
* May prevent ulcers in animals taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)

How does Sulcralfate work?
Sucralfate reacts with acids and proteins to form a barrier to protect the ulcer from further damage.

Is there a generic equivalent available?
Sucralfate is the generic equivalent to Carafate.

How is it given?
Sucralfate is given orally. For dogs and cats, give Sucralfate on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after feeding or giving other medications). Unless directed otherwise, if giving tablets, it is best to crush them and mix with water so the medication is better absorbed.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.

What results can I expect?
Sucralfate coats ulcers in the digestive system and protects them from further damage from stomach acid and bile. If doses are missed or the entire treatment regimen is not completed, symptoms could recur or worsen. Consult your veterinarian if the animal's condition does not improve or worsens after beginning treatment with Sucralfate.
