| To achieve success with your bluebird nesting box, place it in an open area with scattered trees, particularly with low branches for the birds to perch on and watch for insects. Pastures, parks, large lawns, and golf courses are good locations for bluebirds. Heavy ground cover will interfere with their ability to find insects. Place the nesting box where insecticides are not used for the safety of the birds.
The best height for the box is from three to five feet above ground. Lower makes predation easier, and greater heights attract more sparrows. The box should face a tree or shrub with low branches within about 50 feet so that when the babies leave the nest, they may perch safely from predators. It should also face away from prevailing winds, to lessen the chance of rain driving through the entrance.
Place a 4" x 4" post into the ground leaving a height of 3 to 5 ft above the ground. Drill a pilot hole into the center of the top of the post. Turn the double-ended screw (located on the bottom of the Bird House) into your pilot hole until tight against the post. If more support is needed, place a second nail or screw through the bottom panel into the post.
Construction Details
Coveside's nest boxes are constructed of near 1" thick sustainably grown Eastern White Pine in order to provide adequate insulation from heat. Most young birds that die in the nest do so because of heat and inadequate insulation from it. Our lumber is custom milled with a "rougher head" finish, which allows fledglings a foothold when they are ready to climb out of the nest. The Blue Bird House is finished with water-based stain.
Ventilation is provided for at the top of each side panel (front and back panels only on Blue Bird House). The slanted roof overhangs the entrance hole to provide appropriate drainage. The floors have drainage vents to stay dry.
Cleanout
To preserve the long-life of this nesting box, clean it out after each nesting cycle. The front panel has a latch; simply turn the latch so you can tilt out the panel from the bottom for easy cleaning after the young have left the nest.
