Rated 5 out of 5 by Trishly This product is just like the one I bought in a local store but half the price.
Shortly after hanging the nesting ball the American Goldfinch and Sparrows discovered it and started using it. I will definitely continue buying my supplies from Drs Foster and Smith. Why pay more for the same product?

We hang these small nesting "balls" of cotton building material near our feeders. From early spring through autumn the birds use them daily. Even after breeding season is over; we assume they are still getting material for lining roosts in eaves or someplace. Goldfinches particularly flock to these nest building balls, but other small birds like Wrens and Chickadees also seem to like them. These attract more birds on a daily basis than other similar products, at least in our experience. In late autumn, we pitch whatever is left (not much), and start with fresh ones in the spring. Our local bird supply store closed recently, so we're glad we can get the same product(s) through Foster and Smith!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MLPete The birds like these
I have purchased these for several years. It's fun to watch the birds pluck out the cotton and fly to their nests. They are easy to hang. You don't have to stuff the cotton into another container. I always buy 3 and they are gone by Fall. I would highly recommend them.

by LynnBoschert Lots of fun to watch and highly beneficial to birds
I was a little worried I was spending money on something that would go unused in my gardens where we have seven bird feeders and attract many species. I'm a bird photographer and I was hoping the birds would find this ball of 'nesting' material and gosh was I surprised!!! The American Goldfinches are the only birds that are using my Cotton Tails but what a show! They were even fighting over the one I had securely placed in a small tree between branches. (I suggest you use little ties to keep it from blowing around if you have an open backyard. I quickly purchased three more 'Cotton Tails' and placed them in two different trees where we could watch and I could take photographs. I wish you could see all the activity. I know it's more than just one bird because they each fly away in a different direction, taking their bounty to their nest.
Some birds will loosen the cotton up and come back later for an easy 'pickup' of more material. I watched a male Goldfinch guard his female while she gathered the cotton with her beak. They take quite a lot with them and it's really wonderful to watch. If you are going to buy this product, buy more than one if you have a lot of birds. Although, there is a lot of material packed into one of those balls. Mine has been up for three weeks and number one still has a lot of cotton in it, but the birds are using all three Cotton Tails. Another tip if you have dogs with long hair; when you trim their coat, save the hair and put it near the nesting material, the birds love that too!
You won't have to wait long after putting one of these Cotton Tails in your trees, and be prepared to laugh, a lot!!!!!
