Great squirrel feeder which I then modified
My previous squirrel feeder bit the dust when a large branch fell on it. I did not want to disappoint the neighborhood squirrels so I searched for a new feeder. The old one was wooden and had been repaired and redesigned by me many times. I had considered wood, but this time I went for the metal one, and I'm not sorry. I did follow other reviewers' suggestions and added hardware cloth (metal screening made of little squares) so that the plastic insert would remain intact. I first made a paper template and cut the hardware cloth accordingly for a great fit. I was able to attach it well because there are openings just under the top edge and the wires were able to be bent inside those openings. There are no rough edges, and the product appears to be well made. I attached my feeder to a 6-foot 2 x 4 using the included screws and tie-wapped it to a fence post. We have bear in the neighborhood, and I want to have a break-away type of attachment. I also added a shelf to the front by attaching a board to the bottom of the feeder with nuts, bolts and washers so that the squirrels have a place to stand while getting food. There are a number of nicely placed drainage holes in the bottom of the feeder, and I borrowed three of them for the shelf support. It took about 5 days before the squirrels were interested, but we also had warmer weather so they probably found other food sources. They now love it and have done no damage. The feeder is easy to refill, and it holds a large amount of food. It is easy to see if it needs to be refilled, and the top closes nicely to keep the food dry. I'd buy this item again.

How to save bird feed
Once we put this out, the squirrels have left the bird feeders alone. It's great.

Very durable and squirrels love it!
I've just installed my second squirrel feeder - first one has hung for about 5 years and the squirrels and chipmunks battle over it daily. No rust, easy to clean, a little fussy at first to clip feeder onto mounting bracket, but you eventually get good at it. It certainly keeps 'em off the birdfeeders, and we can watch the daily show from our kitchen nook - lotsa fun. We hung them on our big white spruce trees - easy to install. A product that works very well and holds up very well at a reasonable price. Get two! If the chippies/squirrels fuss over how to get in it at first, put a stick through one of the holes to prop the lid up a bit.

Sturdy
I had my feeder for about two years and it began to rust. The bluejays chewed the plastic liner and bent the rusted metal prong to get to the peanuts. I am ordering another feeder but taking out the liner and replacing it with a ceramic or metal bowl.
