This bluebird house is designed to deter sparrows. Some studies have shown that bluebirds prefer a slot entrance to the standard circular-hole entrance, and sparrows prefer the opposite. Also, sparrows tend to avoid shallow homes so the Sparrow-Resistant Bluebird House was constructed to be only 5" deep and includes a wooden insert to decrease the box depth - sparrows will avoid a shallow-depth box, but bluebirds will still occupy the house. Front panel has latch opening for easy cleaning. Handcrafted from 3/4" Eastern White Pine for insulation and durability. House is rough-sawn to give fledglings a foothold when they are ready to climb out of the nest. Ventilation slits help prevent overheating and bottom slits provide drainage. Floor is also recessed to keep inside dry. Mounting hardware not included - two 1-1/2" wood screws recommended. 5-3/4" x 8" x 10" high.

Mounting Location: To achieve success with your bluebird nesting box, place it in an open area with scattered trees, particularly with low branches for the birds to perch on and watch for insects. Pastures, parks, large lawns, and golf courses are good locations for bluebirds. Heavy ground cover will interfere with their ability to find insects. Place the nesting box where insecticides are not used for the safety of the birds.

The best height for the box is from three to five feet above ground. Lower makes predation easier, and greater heights attract more sparrows. The box should face a tree or shrub with low branches within about 50 feet so that when the babies leave the nest, they may perch safely from predators. It should also face away from prevailing winds, to lessen the chance of rain driving through the entrance.

Instructions: Put a screw or nail into the side of a tree or fence post, leaving about 1/4" sticking out. Place the metal hanger at the top of the back over the head of the screw or nail. Place a second nail or screw through the small hole at the bottom of the back and into the post, to hold it securely.

Maintenance: Side tilts out for easy cleaning of the house after the birds are gone. A latch at the bottom holds house securely in place.
