Kaytee Multi-Level Exotics Cage
Affordable and good quality for rats
This cage was purchased to house two full grown male rats. To begin, I live in rural east Tennessee in a town without a pet store. The only privately owned local pet store was closed 6+ months ago, and the population of the town is no where near enough to sustain one of the larger chain pet stores. Small pet stores and Petsmart, Petco and Pet Supplies stores are sixty to ninety minutes away. Factoring in the stress of driving into a bigger city where rush hour never ends, it just isn't worth my time and effort.
I began roaming the internet for stores for a cage of good quality and affordable price, without an enormous shipping cost. I came across MANY good deals on a few very popular websites that host personal stores and auctions. The prices of cages I found at these websites were unbeatable with free shipping, but I found very, very vague details. More often than not, the only description was the dimensions of the cage. There was no manufacturer name listed, no country of origin, the spacing between the wires was not listed, and only one recirculated picture was posted--which was obviously taken from the unnamed manufacturer. The couple reviews I found were one out of five stars, explaining the quality was terrible, assembly was a lot of the times impossible due to frame being warped upon arrival. When attempting to bend the wires or cage into place, the metal was so brittle it would simply snap. I did not want to take one chance investing with one of those "deals."
This cage was around $20 more than the no-named, poor quality cages I found. The one review posted here claimed the wires were a bit flimsy, but there wasn't a mention of them snapping off during assembly. I actually knew and have owned products from the manufacturer, Kaytee, and my satisfaction was guaranteed, so I chose this cage.
I received the cage between December 27-29, I can't remember which day. 2 of my males rats have been living in it for 2 months now. I happy and satisfied overall. The wires do move and are flimsier than the metal wires on the other cage I own--Super Pets My First Home for rats. The bin, levels and ramps are actually thinner than the cage previously mentioned as well. Both of my boys are large and the ramps do flex when they are traveled or sat on. One of my rats is, unfortunately, a chewer and initially chewed holes in the edges of the plastic levels. He has stopped since getting used to his new home though (Picture 1 shows the holes Fred chewed in the plastic platform in the upper left hand corner). I'm 5'6 and the cage comes up to my waist. My boys are so much happier with the space they have, and have no trouble getting up or down. I use Care Fresh bedding, and a minimum of the 14L bag is needed to fill the bin to this cage adequately. Putting the levels in the cage, and lining them up evenly is awkward and difficult. Taking it apart to clean is less hassle. This wouldn't affect or change my opinion of the cage, and wouldn't be a deciding factor in the purchase or a possible return though. If you don't have time to assemble this cage, how would you have time to care for a small pet? I believe this cage is an affordable, good quality alternative when compared to the more expensive Critter Nation and Martin's Cages brands. I however, would like and ultimately aim to own of a cage of that quality and price. This cage fits and sustains the needs of my rats and it isn't truly necessary for them or me to purchase and own anything more expensive.

Good For Rats.Would buy again.
After much searching I got this cage. I really like it for our two female rats as it has 1/2" bar spacing. For my daughters room black cages looked so big & dark so this silver/green was v. nice. We dressed it up with purple wheel, house etc. I also wanted something as big as we could fit but still manageble to clean. The rats love the multi levels to explore & I like the flexibility of moving the levels around to new places but they can be tricky to get in/out for cleaning. It is a bit large to keep moving to the floor so I may get a ladder for the rats to climb to the dresser level. I also like the deep plastic tub which some cages didn't have. My only dissapointment is the wire bars are a bit flimsy. I attached the 11inch silent wheel to the wires to save space and they warp a bit when one is going top speed. The ramps take up space for other toys so I only use 2. Its nice and big but still a "kids room cage". Wish the bars were stronger but thats all. I reccomend it for rats.
