Thank you for your question. I contacted our merchandising department in regards to your question and this is their suggestion:
The african sideneck turtle terrarium should be a 30-40 gallon aquarium, with both a swimming area & beach. This turtle spends most of its day swimming or submerged, but still needs an area to bask on. In a 30-40 gallon aquarium, 25% of the area should be beach, the rest should be water. You could build a sloped beach with the substrate, but a canister filter will not be the best in this type of environment. It is recommended to use a small powerhead in the water area as filtration. The following are 2 links, one for the Hagen AquaClear Powerhead, and the Quick Filter that would be appropriate for use in a beach-type set-up.
