Rated 5 out of 5 by Aquaknot Easy to assemble
The shipment was prompt. The unit was very easy to assemble and setting it up in the tank was easy. It's doing a great job.

I have a 306 on my 55 gallon tank and a 206 on my daughters 29 gallon tank. The filter is actually fairly easy to install and doesn't take a lot of work to set up. The stacking filter baskets are taller and narrower than most other canister filters forcing the water to go through the media you choose. Other canisters have shorter media baskets that are wider. When you have a set up like that the water flow pushes the media out of the way and you get bypass where the water is flowing without media in the way. Think of a used coffee filter. You have seen how the center of the used coffee grounds is really thin yet all the coffee around the outside of the basket is almost to the top. Well the water is going to take the easiest path where there is as little media in the way. So fluval has forced the water to go through a longer instead of wider path. Thereby increasing the effective filtering capabilities of the unit. I use Chemi-Pure in all my canisters along with polishing pads and other optional media choices. I have two friends who used to own fish stores. These friends of mine have never met eachother but both have commented that they have never seen a tank that clear. One actually told me he did not know they could even be that clear. I would also suggest that the intake strainer go at one end of your tank and the outflow at the opposite end, so to maximize the water movement in the tank. And if you can afford it try to get the largest size you can for your tank. I prefer to have the water in all my tanks turning over at least 10 times per hour. Plecos are among my favorites so filtration is a big must for me.
Now this filter is not without its faults. BE CAREFUL WITH THE PRIMING HANDLE!! It is small and will break if you are not careful. It is extremely quiet. And does move a good amount of water. If you have a planted aquarium be prepared to remove leaves and other debris from the intake tube. Luckily it has a check ball preventing most large items from entering the unit itself. The only other real drawback these frees have is the no link hosing does not enable you to use inline heaters or uv sterilizers.

I am writing about the 406 filter system . I have seven other fluval systems that have had small issues they are the 405's,305's But in general I have found the Fluval's to be up to now the best on the market till now.
Like said till now!The 406 models are a different breed! Their construction of the impeller system is terrible. If you enjoy having to replace parts or the loud sounds that occur on a semi regular basis after cleaning. The noises will start and stop for no reason. I''ve had this unit looked at and replaced impeller covers and impeller shafts. I try to stay way from touching anything part of it . I even have taken it to have evaluated by another shop owner that stated that they all do it . That the system was flawed.
The impeller cover does not always stay on or comes loose and causes the impeller to break. . Now in return caused the motor to over heat and has actually cause the product to fail.
I have replaced this one unit 3 time to place of purchase. Now I am stuck with unit that I have to worry about every time I go away .
I wish they still offered the 405 ,because they are very reliable.
All I can stress is that beware of this unit,I feel it's the worst out there.
