Exo Terra Sand Mat Desert Terrarium Substrate 19.5" x 9.75" fits 10 Gallon Terrariums (Mfg# PT2565)
Excellent for beardies
This sand mat fits perfectly in our Exto-Terra front open terrarium (size large). It's easy to clean and the beardie seems to enjoy it. Plus it gives a nice desert look to his area.

Best substrate for realistic effects.
I have been using the felt type of liner substrate and was glad when I found a source of this new product. The Exo Terra Sand Mat Desert Terrarium Substrate is a natural looking product that works well and clean up is easy. As a bonus, it helps keep their nails filled down.
The Exo Terra Sand Mat Desert Terrarium Substrate is not something you can just throw in the washing machine like I do with the felt liners, but it is easy to spot clean. I will be transferring all of my terrariums over to this great product.

This product looks really desert like
We have a bearded dragon and we had his tank covered with the fake turf stuff but his nails would get stuck in it every once in a while so we decided to try this new mat. It's really nice and I think it keeps the bottom of the tank warmer. I think it might also help dull his nails a little since there is actual rock on the bottom of it. It might also help him when he's shedding (to rub up against it.) Cleaning it should be relatively easy since you just have to spray it off (but we haven't done this yet - we still put paper towel down in the corner he seems to like to use and it works out well.)

But wait! There's more! Decent product with many pros, but one ultimate con- Excrement!
After arguing with my boyfriend over the care of our bearded dragon, Takkun, and what is most appropriate for his terrarium (to avoid impaction, complications with nails, for convenience, etc.), so I chose to give this product a shot. Yes, there is a strange odor at first and some loose pieces. I recommend opening the packaging outside, then allowing the mat to sit in the sun for a few hours. It will still produce a little odor initially when placed under the basking lamp, but only for a short while. The dimensions fit my 36x18x18 40 gallon terrarium fantastically. I noticed a quick and pleasant change in Takkun's nails in no time.
Now for the part of ultimate disappointment- attempting to clean it.
I had looked to the company's website for cleaning instructions prior to purchase, and could not find the product they suggested, so instead substituted with another cleaner/ deodorizer/ disinfectant. Due to the nature of its construction, scrubbing isn't much of an option without possibly damaging the product, so I attempted to allow the spray to sit for a few minutes followed by dabbing with a paper towel. I have tried several times and altered my attempts slightly, so as to not destroy the product. Sad to say, my boyfriend and I have returned to the former substrate. I may try again in the future with a light covering of ground walnut shell, just to ensure that there isn't direct contact between the mat and waste.
While the product was not all I had hoped for, the website for Drs. Foster and Smith enabled me to experiment without costing an arm and a leg.
