Make sure you have the right lamp
The 160W Solar Glo is designed for very large terrariums with a minimum height of 48 inches, room enclosures, walk-in enclosure and for veterinary use. The 125W is more appropriate for medium to large size terrariums with a minimum height of 30 inches.
If the bulb is to be mounted inside the terrarium, then the minimum height is 48 inches for the 125W and 60 inches for the 160W Solar Glo. Be sure to provide enough space to allow the animal to be a minimum of 12 inches from the bulb's surface in addition to providing a temperature and UV gradient within the terrarium.
- Carefully remove the bulb from its packaging, hold bulb by the base and inspect the glass envelope for any possible cracks or damage.
- The Exo Terra Solar Glo must be housed in a fixture with a ceramic/porcelain base that is rated for at least the wattage of the lamp. DO NOT use a plastic socket as it is a fire hazard and will void the warranty. The Solar Glo must be mounted in a vertically oriented fixture so the bulb points straight down and NOT at an angle. Mounting this bulb at an angle will reduce its burn life and will void any warranty.
- Do not use this bulb in conjunction with a dimmer or thermostat.
- This bulb is sensitive to high temperatures and vibration. Make sure that it is mounted in a place with good ventilation and where it will not be disturbed. Moving the bulb while switched ON will shorten its life and void the warranty.
- Mounting Location: The Solar Glo will function best when mounted outside the terrarium where it is not exposed to extreme heat, humidity and vibration. If you must mount the bulb inside the terrarium, make sure your reptile cannot come in contact with it. If the bulb shuts off unexpectedly, a safety feature (thermal reset) has likely occurred.
- Plug fixture into an electrical outlet (surge protector is recommended). The Solar Glo will take five minutes to warm up and reach its full intensity. The bulb's output will continue to change hue (or color) until it has completely warmed up.
- Restarting: The Solar Glo bulb will take 15 minutes to cool down after turning off the bulb, before being restarted. This is due to a thermal reset feature intended to prevent damage due to overheating the bulb.
- If the Solar Glo shuts off for no apparent reason, one of the following condition may exist:
- The power being supplied to your outlet is inappropriate or fluctuating. Small changes in line voltage can trip the bulb's thermal reset mechanism. If the voltage is consistently low, then the bulb will not be able to function properly. Check with your local utility or your electrician to verify your voltage. Overdriving the bulb (i.e. high voltage levels) by as little as 10% can decrease burn life by more than 50% and would void any warranty.
- There is too much heat in or around the terrarium and the bulb. The Solar Glo's thermal reset feature will shut the bulb off for a cool down period if it gets too hot. Using the bulb iN a place or fixture that is not well ventilated can cause heat buildup. If the bulb occasionally shuts off to cool down and later restarts (usually about 15 minutes), this is normal.
Note: The daily duration for which the Solar Glo should be on depends upon the animal and the size of the terrarium setup. For example, if you leave the Solar Glo on for eight hours per day and your animal periodically basks under the bulb with no discomfort, plus the animal feeds and behaves normally then eight hours would seem to be the correct exposure time. However, if your animal only basks for a short period of time, breaths with an open mouth, keeps its eyes closed for long periods, goes to the opposite end of the terrarium and tries to hide, or any combination of these behaviors, the exposure time should be decreased or the distance of the bulb from the animal should be increased.
General Information
The Exo Terra Solar Glo Sun Simulating Lamp is the solution to one of the most important aspects of keeping reptiles and amphibians, providing the benefits of natural sunlight. The proper balance of ultraviolet light (including UVA and UVB), visual light and infrared light (heat) in one easy-to-install bulb makes the Exo Terra Solar Glo the choice of professional breeders. The Solar Glo is a full spectrum light with carefully tuned peaks to ensure appetite, activity, brilliant colors, and calcium absorption through Vitamin D3 production, and above all to prevent metabolic bone disease.
Exo Terra Solar Glo is a lamp that is designed to simulate natural sunlight, emitting optimal levels of UV rays, visual light and infrared (heat). The especially high amounts of UVA and UVB rays are among the many beneficial aspects of this new generation herpetoculture lamp. The Exo Terra Solar Glo is especially suited for larger terrariums where reptiles can regulate their exposure. The Exo Terra Solar Glo is also recommended when very high UVB intensity is required, such as breeding programs and for reptiles recovering from metabolic bone disease. |
