Zoo Med 501 Turtle Filter
I Love my "Zoo Med 501 Turtle Filter"!
I was just on the Doctors Foster & Smith site to order a new sponge filter for my 501 filter and was quite surprised at a couple of negative reviews, we have been using this filter system for almost 5 years now, we purchased it when it first came into the market. It is the "BEST" filter unit for our 30 Gal. Red Eared Slider tank; we have the tank filled up to around 8 inches from the top. This unit always keeps the water crystal clear and clean, you have to make sure that you are flushing the tank once a week for proper maintenance. This is by far the best filter system out there for your money unless you want to pay hundreds of dollars for the very pricy ones. I purchase my own carbon and mesh bag to save money from the pricey costs of the filters, but I also replace the sponge around every 4 months, rinsing it out well when I flush the tank. You won't be sorry with this purchase, its great!

Very impressed for a small filter.
My daughter has a 40 gal. turtle tank (filled half full with water) home to two red-eared sliders. It has been in operation for almost two years now and I have tried a variety of internal/decorative filters that just didn't get the job done. I use a Fluvall 405 in my 75 gal. aquarium and decided to get my daughter a good external filter that would be easy for her to maintain and liked the looks of the Zoo Med 501 so we went for it. After a day of it running we noticed a huge difference in water clarity and the turtles activeness. They really seemed to enjoy the "raining" effect of the water return. We have been using this pump for three months now and have been very impressed with the overall effectiveness of this small pump. Easy to set up, doesn't take up alot of room, and VERY quiet. All we hear is the trickle of the water as it falls back into the tank. Our monthly maintenance is easy #keep an eye on the top's o-ring to make sure it doesn't dry out!# and we use a reusable "sock" that I fill with Ammo-Carb for the chemical filtration making it economical. Bottom line: the water is clear, oderless, and the turtles are loving it.
The only con is the raining splatter does cause a build up on the side of the tank, but as long as we stay on top of it, it's easily manageable.

Good filter system
I use this filter system on my many turtle tanks. It helps filter the water keeping the tank water cleaner between tank cleaning. It is not however a substitute for routine cleaning & tank maintance.
It is quiet, durable & has been dependable for the many years I have been using them. A great system for smaller tank enclosures. The included spray bar also gives a nice water fall effect for the turtles.

Overall Not the Best Product..
I recently bought a 29 gallon tank for my Red-Eared-Slider.. The other tank was leaking. I bought the ZooMed 501 because with more water I needed more filtration... It was slightly difficult to assemble but mostly simple. I replaced the activated carbon with better stuff and changed the mechanical media to a more reliable media. I hooked up all the hoses to the tank and plugged it in... Probably one of the most quiet filters I have ever heard. I have had it in for 3 weeks now and my tank is horribly cloudy and dirty.. I would not reccommend this to anyone planning on purchasing it.. DOES NOT keep the water clean at all.. I'm going to send this back for a refund and find myself a better canister filter.
