Pond Breather 23" x 8" float; 40 watt
I purchased a pond breather in 2014 and placed it in my pond and turned it on in November. I lowered the water level to around 4.5 feet to be below the skimmer. My pond froze over in Jan.2015 and by Feb. I had about 8 " of ice and 12" of snow around the pond breather and that lasted until March when I cleared it all off. The snow stayed clear from the unit all the time and it never quit working. I use to put up a green house over the pond, so I was worried if this unit would work and be inexpensive and now I'm very convinced with the reliability and satisfied with this product, and never lost any fish.

Excellent product for Koi Ponds
I have 2 koi ponds. One 8,000 gallon and one 5,500 gallon. I'm finding it works best to use just the pond breather when it starts to freeze over. If the pond freezes on top and the breather is properly installed, it keeps more heat in the pond and though I net the ponds, the leaves that get under the net are on the of the ice at least until thaw. The ice on the pond also keeps the wind from creating thermals and laying over in the fish. This is an all around good product and also cheap to run. MUCH cheaper than a heater to keep an opening. Weather wise, in this area ponds start freezing in November and thawing in February. The pond will get about 4 - 5 inches of ice on top.

This is all you'll need
After reading the reviews and spec's I decided to give it a try in our new 1500 gal pond in the Chicago area. Figured if folk’s way farther north are using it we'd be just fine. Once the pond had solidly iced over with the breather frozen in place it freaked the wife out as well as our pond friends who were all worried that the fish were not going to survive. Well here it is 3-4 years / seasons later and we've lost not one fish over the winter. As the fish have grown I increased the pumps flow rate, that’s it. If you want to see your fish over the winter and have the electrical costs for bubblers & or heaters don’t buy this product. If you want some maintenance free time from your pond with low electrical bills I highly recommend this product.

Works as advertised
I purchased the Allied Precision Pond Breather a few weeks ago. We installed in two inch thick ice to replace a failing traditional heater. A week after installation, we had four days of weather as low a -6 F ranging to 10 F. During this time, the pond breather continued to pump water and aerate the pond, never freezing up. This is amazing for such a small trickle of water.
The device makes a very soft bubbling sound - so you can hear that it is working, even in total darkness. Our fish have been congregating near the pump - seeming to enjoy the moving water and perhaps the slight additional warmth.
The device is very well constructed - it installed in minutes. I would recommend this to anyone concerned about maintaining oxygen levels over winter.
