Power Heat Pond De-icer 500W
This de-icer works well to maintain an opening in the ice in winter. Best of all, the LED lights tell you when it is heating and when it is in the "standby" mode. It also has an extra long cord which allows you to place it out in the middle of your pond. On my unit the green light indicates it is heating, while the red light indicates "standby" mode. (On the internet it is the opposite).

I live in North Carolina and we have had an extremely cold winter this year. I have had a water garden for 9 years and never needed a de-icer. I always keep my filtration running and I have a "Jan made" (instead of man made) stream flowing into it. That usually has created enough water movement to keep my pond from freezing. Well not this year! Temperatures plummeted and then the snow came. I have never been so stressed. I went online and began reading the reviews of many de-icers. Yes there were some less expensive on Drs Foster but the reviews were not as good. I didn't want to put my fish through unnecessary stress nor myself so i went with this one. ALL reviews were good with it. It is light and durable, sleek in appearance and it has a neat indicator light on top that is easily visible. It immediately began defrosting and this water had ice approximately 3 inches thick. Thank you Drs Foster & Smith for once again making my ever so loved project a worry free pond.

Best pond heater.
Record setting cold here in Western Pennsylvania this winter. This heater doing the job that other heaters did not accomplish.

My second winter with this de-icer and I cannot say enough about it. I live in a Chicago suburb and recently we went through the coldest temps on record. I was worried how this de-icer would hold up against -17 true temps and -50 wind chills. The pond has two aeration discs and the de-icer. The aeration holes completely froze over but the de-icer hole stayed open. I bundled up and went out to triple check that I just wasn't imagining things but when I got out there, it sure enough was open. I even saw a puff of steam come out of the small hole really letting me know it was working. Don't waste your time or money with other de-icers. Spend a couple extra bucks knowing your pond will have a gas exchange hole during the brutally cold days. I also enjoy having the light on top letting me know everything is working properly.
