• Familiarize yourself with local predators - Depending on where you live, different predators may pose a threat to pond fish. Examples of pond predators include raccoons, opossums, muskrats, beavers, otters, foxes, and even bears. Herons and kingfishers may also visit to become unwanted guests for pond keepers.
• Preformed ponds or small ponds with shallow areas are the most vulnerable to predators.
• Provide hiding places to save your fish from predators - Use pond plants to create a more secure environment for your fish. For even better protection, fashion caves out of rocks or place sections of wide diameter black PVC tubing or plastic culvert - held in place by rocks - on the bottom of your pond. • Consider using animal decoys - Some predators, like herons, are territorial and will not intrude on an area they perceive to be dominated by another of its own kind.
