How It Works
What is germicidal ultraviolet?
Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye. It is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that lies beyond the purple range of the visible spectrum. The ultraviolet (or UV) spectrum has wavelengths between 100 and 400 nanometers (nm). The UV spectrum is further divided into wavelength ranges named UVA, UVB, and UVC.

UVA: sun tanning, testing, inspection, insect traps, stage effects, blacklight, phototherapy (315-400nm)
UVB: sun burning, inspection, analysis, testing, phototherapy (280-360nm)
UVC: germicidal (253.7nm), ozone producing (185nm)

UVC light is germicidal i.e., it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens and destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UVC light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevents the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies.

Purely UV Replacement UVC Lamps 9W, 6-1/2" (Mfg#PUVH2309) 1 5 1 1

2 DOA Bulbs....DO NOT BUY Title says it all, purchased 2 of the 9w bulbs and both were defective out of the box. I went to my LFS and purchased the coralife bulb for twice the price and it worked just fine, so I can confirm my UV sterilizer balast works properly. DO NOT BUY this product. Save yourself time and frustration, just not money! September 20, 2012

UV bulb...is it working?

i cannot tell if my UV bulb is workiing - -i cannot see any visible light or glow.

Depending on the unit you are using, the lamp being on should be visible at some inspection port or from the hose connections as the ones on the Tetra sterilizer I have are clear plastic. Thus, I can always tell if the lamp has output and is on or not in that way. Lamps are useful for about a year. After that the output decreases and eventually the filament that keeps them going will break and then the lamp will no longer light. It is suggested that the lamp be replaced once a year- probably in the spring when the pond is started back up again as this is when you need the most output to deal with algae blooms. I use mine except for the winter where it could freeze solid.
