Use Current USA brand germicidal lamp for reliable UV sterilization |
Maintain Gamma UV Sterilizer performance with replacement UV Lamps and Quartz Sleeve.
The quartz glass used in the Gamma UV allows the highest transmission of UV light in the industry. This light transmission can be affected by calcium and other mineral deposits on the Quartz Sleeve. It is recommended that the Quartz Sleeve be removed every 6 months and soaked in vinegar or any calcium/hard water stain remover to dislodge these deposits. Replace if necesarry. The T-5 UV Lamp should be replaced every 9-10 months for maximum efficiency. Replacing the UV Lamp with Current USA brand germicidal lamp ensures the highest performance.

Safety Instructions
The Gamma Ultraviolet Sterilizer MUST be plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet at all times. Do not operate the UV Lamp without water flow. Overheating may occur to the lamp or Gamma UV Sterilizer body. Inspect the unit once a month for any damage due to corrosion. Remove from service if damage is found.
Once the Gamma UV Sterilizer is assembled, it is strongly recommended that you "water test" the unit. Observe initial operation for a minimum of 30 minutes to ensure the unit is running properly and there are no leaks. At no point should you look directly at the uninstalled UV Lamp while it is lit. Serious eye damage can occur. The clear threaded viewing sections on the UV Body will indicate whether the lamp is working once the Lamp is installed.
Installation
Step One
- Place the Gamma UV in a horizontal position.
- Locate the clear Quartz Sleeve and gently insert it into the UV Body, rounded end first.
- Insert the Quartz Sleeve into the Compression Fitting but do not insert the Quartz Sleeve all the way into the Sterilizer. Leave 1/8" of Quartz Sleeve coming out of the Compression Fitting.
Step Two
- Hand tighten the Quartz Sleeve Locking Nut, making sure the Quartz Sleeve remains in place with 1/8" sticking out of the Compression Fitting.
- Check to see if the Quartz Sleeve is firmly and securely in place.
- A preliminary "water test" is crucial before full installations or making any electrical connections. If the Quartz Sleeve is not installed correctly, water may leak into the Lamp Connection area and result in an electrical short.
Step Three
- Your Gamma UV (8 watt, 15 watt, & 25 watt units) can be configured for numerous different plumbing options. Use the provided roll of Teflon tape to secure the threaded parts to prevent leaks.
- Apply Teflon tape to the threaded male portion of each connection. Apply the Teflon tape so there is a double layer over the threads. When applying Teflon tape to the clear threaded portions, be sure to leave a small gap between the tape and base on the threaded portion to allow proper visibility of the refracted UV light.
Step Four
- Once your Gamma UV has been assembled to your specific configurations, you can connect the water pump to the UV Sterilizer. The Gamma comes with two types of connections for the Inlet, an extension with powerhead adapter, and two sizes of barbed connections. Attach the connections of your choice to the Threaded 90° Fitting coming off of the top of the sterilizer body. Be sure to use Teflon tape on all threaded connections. The powerhead adapter will accept small submersible powerheads with an outlet size of 1/2" (Outside Dimension).
Step Five
- The Gamma UV also comes with different Outlets: A 3/4" Barbed Fitting (for connecting vinyl tubing), and a 4" Outlet Extension Pipe that attaches to the 90° Slip Elbow for directional water flow back into the aquarium.
Step Six
- Once the Gamma UV Sterilizer has been assembled, place the unit into its configured position. If you are using the unit as a "hang-on," the Stabilizing Bracket can be clipped onto the main body of the Sterilizer. Secure with the double-sided tape to keep the unit from sliding.
Step Seven
- Turn on the pump supplying water to UV Sterilizer. Check all connection on the unit for leaks and monitor for at least 30 minutes. If leaks occur, it may be necessary to tighten or use more Teflon tape.
Step Eight
- Once you have determined that your Gamma UV is leak-free, it is time to install the UV Lamp. Locate the UV Lamp and the Lamp Socket with ballast assembly. Insert the pins of the UV Lamp firmly into the Lamp Socket. Be sure to hold the UV Lamp by the ends instead of the clear tube. Feed the Lamp and Socket Assembly through the Quartz Locking Nut and into the sterilizer body. Thread and tighten the base of the Socket Assembly into the Quartz Locking Nut. Only tighten this connection, as well as all other connections on your Gamma UV, by hand.
Step Nine
- Plug the Ballast into a properly matched electrical outlet. You will see a faint glow coming from the clear threaded fittings. It may take up to 30 seconds for the UV lamp to ignite upon initial operation. Make sure that the lamp is firmly seated into the Lamp Socket.
Maintenance
Although the Gamma UV requires little maintenance, there are a few suggestions that will ensure the highest sterilization efficiency. NOTE: When performing any maintenance, the unit MUST be disconnected from the power supply.
- The quartz glass used in the Gamma UV allows the highest transmission of UV light in the industry. This light transmission can be affected by calcium and other mineral deposits on the Quartz Sleeve. It is recommended that the Quartz Sleeve be removed every 6 months and soaked in vinegar or any calcium/hard water stain remover to dislodge these deposits. While soaking the Quartz Sleeve, it is also recommended that you circulate fresh water through the Sterilizer to remove any debris. Thoroughly rinse the Quartz Sleeve in a sink or with a hose. Allow the Quartz Sleeve to dry completely before reinstalling it into the Gamma UV. Pump maintenance can be performed during this time.
- The T-5 UV Lamp should be replaced every 9-10 months for maximum efficiency. Replacing the UV Lamp with Current USA brand germicidal lamp ensures the highest performance.
