Why UVB & UVA?
UVB enables birds to synthesize Vitamin D3 for proper calcium metabolism, which is necessary for normal growth, maintenance of strong bones, and egg production. UVA is visible to birds, enabling them to recognize mates, locate food, and identify different species. Without UVA, birds are essentially colorblind!
Please click on "More Information" for the benefits of UVB and UVA lighting and safety, assembly, and operation instructions.
Until recently, the needs of birds with respect to lighting were not well understood. We now know that birds benefit from UVB and UVA lighting.
UVB: Researchers have found that most birds benefit from UVB. Exposure to UVB allows birds to synthesize Vitamin D3 in their skin, or through a special process involving the preen gland. Vitamin D3 is essential for proper calcium metabolism. This is necessary for normal growth, maintenance of strong bones, and egg production.
UVA and "Visible Light": Birds have specialized retinas that enable them to see UVA, helping them to recognize mates, locate food, and identify different species. Using lighting that emits UVA can help curb feather picking and other destructive behaviors. Without UVA, birds are deprived of the full color spectrum they see in nature and are colorblind! UVA is necessary for the psychological health of your bird.

ASSEMBLY
Remove weighted base and place on floor.
Remove the two poles and tightly screw the lower pole (threaded at both ends) onto the weighted base.
Next, tightly screw the upper pole onto the lower pole.
Loosen the set screw located near the top of the upper pole just below the plastic bushing (this screw locks the lamp fixture/arm assembly to the upper pole).
Insert the base of the arm assembly into the plastic bushing on the upper pole.
Attach the lamp reflector housing to the lamp fixture by lining up the raised bump on the inside of the housing with one of the two tabs on the lamp fixture. The lamp reflector housing will "snap" into place in the groove on the lamp fixture when properly attached. DO NOT FORCE.
Secure power cord to poles using plastic clip (included).
OPERATION
Make sure that the floor lamp fixture is unplugged prior to screwing the lamp into the socket. Screw the compact fluorescent lamp completely into the socket. Read Safety Instructions prior to operating your new lamp.
Place the floor lamp fixture next to your bird's cage or perch. Position the lamp reflector housing so that it is 12"-18" from your bird. For birds on open perches (not in a cage), make sure that your bird does not attempt to perch on the fixture or chew on the power cord. If the power cord becomes damaged, unplug and discontinue use.
Turn on lamp and allow lamp to warm up (about 30 minutes). For birds from arid regions that receive significant sunlight exposure (i.e. African Grey Parrots), position the lamp 12" from the bird's normal perch location. For birds that receive less sunlight in nature, the lamp can be positioned 18" from the perch. The lamp should only be used during the daytime to provide your bird with the correct photoperiod.
NOTE ON LAMP BURN-IN:
Compact fluorescent lamps have a "burn-in" period when the light and UVB output is at its greatest. For your AvianSun 5.0 Compact Fluorescent Lamp, this period lasts about two weeks when the lamp is used to provide a normal photo period or day/night cycle at 10 to 12 hours per day (150 hours of use). Refer to the following chart for recommended distances during and after the burn period. Zoo Med's AvianSun Deluxe Floor Lamp is fully adjustable enabling you to easily adjust the distance of the lamp to your bird's cage.
APPLICATION CHART:
DURING/AFTER BURN-IN
RECOMMENDED OPERATING DISTANCE*
During burn-in
18-20" (46-51 cm)
After burn-in
12-14" (30-36 cm)
*NOTES ON OPERATING RANGE: *The Recommended Distance refers to the distance from the lamp to your bird's perch. The lamp should be placed directly overhead of your bird. DO NOT place the lamp on the side of the cage causing your bird to stare into the lamp. WARNING: DO NOT place the lamp closer to your bird than the recommended distances listed above as eye damage may occur.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR LAMP: Your lamp will provide beneficial UVA and UVB for a period of 12 months. After 12 months, the lamp should be replaced with a new AvianSun 5.0 Compact Fluorescent Lamp. Before you turn on your lamp for the first time, date the base of the lamp to remind yourself when to replace it.
Birds need light. Their health and behavior are affected daily, as well as seasonal. Natural sunlight helps produce essential vitamins needed to keep feathers and skin healthy. UV lighting benefits your bird if natural light is not available.
Full-spectrum lights emit light across the entire range of the possible lightbulb spectrum and some contain UVB in amounts beneficial to our avian friends.
