Yes it does. Mine came in a sturdy, blue, plastic, foam lined carrying case. With another little section for the included dropper, and calibrating screwdriver to be stored also.

after reading reviews, I am confused as to how necessary it is to purchase calibration fluid or to just use distilled water.

Answer:

Distilled water is all that is required. (Actually I use tap water. It's not that different.) Your refractometer should be adjusted so that distilled water reads 1.000

Answer:

You don't need to use the calibration fluid. Just use your plain RO water, and calibrate it until the line sits at the "0" marker.

Answer:

Thank you for your question. You will be able to use either the solution or the RO water. When using the calibration solution, it will not calibrate down to zero it should be calibrated up to 35 ppt, using RO water it will calibrate to zero.

Answer:

The range of operation for this refractometer is 0-100 ppt salinity. Brine solution is greater than 50 ppt. This is well within the range of this meter. Since Brine is a solution of salt, I would say it is designed to work with a brine solution.
