This works! I use this in conjunction with adding additional bacteria from another one of my aquariums. I have used this exclusively in the past to seed new setups and it does jump-start the cycle.
Two things to note. I wouldn't add a LOT of fish right away, I would say to add 2 inches of fish for every 10 gallons and then wait until you see good solid nitrate readings to know for sure your tank has cycled and then introduce additional fish at 2 inches of fish per week to populate your tank. This gives bacteria time to catch up to the bioload of the fish you are adding.
Another thing to note...this product is dated so be sure to check on the bottom of the bottle to make sure it has not expired.
One last thing....'Dr.'s Foster & Smith' also offer a bacteria in 1 gallon container which I have found works just as well as Tetra SafeStart and is much cheaper. I like having a gallon on hand to add when I do water changes or have to throw together an emergency hospital tank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DeborahBaerg Best way to start a new tank, or to help clean up an over-crowded tank. Great help.
I use this all the time when I add water or do water changes - it helps overall water quality and the fish health shows it. It is a great product. I wouldn't be without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by eddienyc1 this is the one product that worked for me
I had a few bouts with disease in my discus tank over the past several months, each time treating with antibiotics which destroyed the beneficial bacteria. I've tried several other products (Stability, Nite-out, Micro-lift, etc), none of them recycled the task. Ammonia and Nitrite readings were unaffected. This last time around I tried Tetra Safe Start Plus. I have a 165 gallon tank so I needed 2 8oz bottles, added over the course of 2 days. By the 3rd day my ammonia & nitrite readings went from "off the charts" to zero. I almost couldn't believe it worked as well as it did, after spending so much money on other products that did nothing. I'll definitely recommend this product, as it's the only one that worked for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Hansonzg Best Starter product I have used!
I have used this 5 times on different tanks and ponds with great success. Here are some tips I have learned for success with this product:
You cannot use Safe Start to clear high ammonia levels. Safe Start is living bacteria that can be killed by already present high levels of ammonia, just like the fish can. You have to do partial water changes to reduce the ammonia levels down to below 2.0. Once they are less than this, you can add the Safe Start and it will finish removing the ammonia, and establish your biological filter for you. Keep in mind, this will take up to a week for it to complete.
wait 24 hrs after water change to add safe start. if levels don't go down after a couple days the product is not working. Last 1 year unopened. Lasts 6 months opened tightly closed lid. In a new tank, we recommend two weeks before performing a water change after tetra safe start is added. In an established tank where you might be trying to just re-seed after medicating or something, one week. So in your case, two weeks or now.Yes, it could. When online companies ship it, they typically use ice packs, etc, to adjust the temperature and keep it stable. It is safe between 40 degrees and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.Yes, there is an expiration date on the bottom of each bottle. Also, only feed once every three days for the first month, 1 to 2 pieces of food per fish. Only change 5 gal at a time diluting it. slowly, then check ammonia levels to be less than 2.0 ppm.
