Fluval M Heater 50W 3.6 5 12 12

Great product! I have two of these heaters each in a different tank. They work wonderfully and I like that you can adjust the temperatures yourself. They are fully and completely submersed in my tanks. One of them is even horizontally placed a few inches above the substrate without any ill affects. April 18, 2013

This product is very easy to operate This product is very nice looking in the tank & I really like how easy it is to see the temp setting & set the temp. Very nice heater . I am going to order another one when I set up my other tank. February 9, 2013

Very good! Will recommend! Will recommend this product. It works great All you have to do is set the temp you want your water to be at and it will maintain it at that temp. Best of all it looks good in the tank. And it has a cool color light that tells you when is ON not that boring red light that othe heaters have. June 4, 2012

Great Heater I also received this heater because of the recall on the Stealth heater. Like many others I wasn't sure if the heater was fully submersible. With the water level lines on the heater you would think its not fully submersible. But I did email Hagen and they said that it is fully submersible. Now that thats out of the way, it is a great heater. Looks great, works great and is accurate. 2 thumbs up. November 12, 2011

Submersible or not?

There seems to be a difference of opinion in the reviews on this heater truly being submersible... so is it, or isen't it? Thanks :)

Its not completely sumergible. The top part where the temperature is adjusted has to be out of the water.

Answer:

No, it is not submersible. There is a line on the heater that must be above water, causing the heater to stick several inches above the top of your aquarium.

It "IS" fully submersible. I emailed Hagen and they wrote me back saying it is fully submersible. Ive been using it for almost a year and I have just the top part sticking out of the water and no problems.

Fluval representatives have stated that Canadian government regulations mandated a maximum water line be indicated, presumably as a safety precaution. (The distributor is headquartered in Montreal.)

While it is prudent to keep the top of ANY "submersible" heater above water, few of us do. I do so in tanks where layout permits, but my Fluval M is in one where it must be totally submerged, and it performs admirably that way. I could readily switch heaters around and put the Fluval M in one of my tanks where I keep the heater partly emersed, but I don't bother. These are as safe to use submerged as any other heater.

Yes it's submersible. Just make sure to unplug it when cleaning the tank. Mine broke when I forgot to unplug it.

Thank you for your question. The Fluval M Heater is not fully submersible. There is a water line marked on it, near the top. It is just under the wider top, where you can adjust the temperature. If you view the larger image on our site, you can view where the maximum and minimum water levels are marked on the heater.

What is the minimum depth that this heater has to be submerged?

I would like to place this heater in a vertical postion in the overflow box but I am not sure if there is a minimum depth that this heater has to be submerged in water? The minimum water level in the overflow box is 8-3/4" deep.

Thank you for your question. The 50 Watt heater is 11” long, and has a maximum water line at 8”, with a minimum water line at 7-1/2”. We would not recommend having a heater in an overflow box. Because the water in an overflow box travels very quickly, a 50 Watt heater will not provide enough heat for the aquarium water. You may wish to consider an in-line heater, such as the Hydor ETH (item# 17026). In-line heaters use more wattage to compensate for the faster flow of water. -pjm

Heater for outdoor 100 gal stock tank

I have 8 small goldfish in an outdoor stock tank. I am looking for a heater that will do well outside.
I was recommended the heating units from Drs. Foster and Smith, but do not know which ones are for an
outside tank??

Thank you for your question. We apologize, none of our aquarium heaters are designed for use outdoors. We do carry pond de-icers; however, these will not heat the water. They would only keep a small area at the surface of the water from freezing, to allow for proper gas exchange. Below, we have included a link to these.
