Filter Assembly and Installation
Installing electrical components - Do not plug in yet!
Fill Media Box with filter media that is included and close Media Box Lid. Thoroughly rinse out foam pad and filled Media Box under running lukewarm water.
(A) Insert Foam Pad in the filter front cover. Insert Media Box behind foam pad. (B) Fit tab at bottom of Media Box into slot of filter front cover. Snap top into place. (C) Insert the two tabs on the filter front cover into the slots located at the bottom of the main filter housing. Cover snaps shut.
Slide assembled filter down into place on one of the back aquarium corners. Note: Curved corners are the front of the aquarium.
Lighting Assembly and Installation
Insert the Lamp Suspension Bracket into the Guide Holes on the back of the filter.
Snap the PowerLED lamp into the Lamp Suspension Bracket and align the light so that it is centered. IMPORTANT: Observe the directions of the arrow. It must be facing frontward otherwise; it will not function.
Connect the PowerLED power supply by inserting the two bottom prongs of the Lamp Suspension Bracket into the two receptacle holes of the lamp cable. Twisting gently will help them slip in.
Attach heater (if required).
Rinse gravel thoroughly. Do not rinse live sand. Add gravel to aquarium. Clean all decorations under running water prior to adding to aquarium. Decorate aquarium interior. NOTE: The manufacturer recommends that you use only décor that is suited for aquarium use and that is available at aquarium retailers. TIP: Hide the equipment (filter, heater) at the back, behind suitably tall growing plants.
Fill with water. Slowly pour lukewarm water (approximately 75°F) up to 1" below aquarium top. Avoid disturbing the gravel bed by pouring the water down the sides of the aquarium.
Add the correct dosage of bacteria starter and water conditioner (the conditioner improves and stabilizes the water quality and eliminates chemicals, chlorine, heavy metals and many other harmful contaminants that are in tap water).
Attention: Before plugging in the unit, make sure you create a "drip loop" with the power cord below the level of the electrical socket. This is to prevent water from traveling along the cord and coming into contact with the electrical socket.
Switch on your equipment. Let the filter run normally.
TIP: If adding a heater, set the heater to the desired temperature and wait until it is achieved.
If your setup includes live plants, live rock or soft corals, please note that they have specific light time requirements between 8-10 hours a day. NOTE: Too much light can also produce unwanted algae. For a consistent lighting schedule, a light timer can be installed.
Adding Livestock to your Aquarium
Choose your livestock and add to your aquarium. It is recommended that you allow a minimum of one gallon of water for every inch of fish, excluding the tail. Account for some growth in your fish and make sure they have enough swimming room. Lastly, choose your fish according to water type and types of fish that can live together.
Maintenance & Care: Cleaning your Filter
Every time you notice the flow rate has significantly decreased, which can occur between 1 to 3 months, you should clean your filter.
Unplug filter. Lift the main filter housing up and then pull and remove the filter front cover. Behind the grill, you will find the foam pad and the Media Box filled with Eheim Substrat Pro.
Remove the foam pad and Media Box. Squeeze foam pad out under lukewarm water. Squeeze out gently, so that the bacterial colonies are not completely destroyed.
Every 3-4 cleanings, a portion of the Eheim Substrat Pro should be replaced in order to maintain best bacteria colonization. Never change more than 2/3 at one time. Reassemble and return the components back into the main filter housing.TIP: To maintain bacteria colony, rinse Media Box with aquarium water.
Maintenance for your Filter Pump
Unplug the filter and remove the complete unit from the aquarium. Remove the pump lid and pump cover. Remove impeller with needle nose pliers. Then take off the dosing chamber and clean the chamber, pump chamber, outflow opening and impeller with a cleaning brush. Reassemble all the components back into the main filter housing and close the pump lid. Return the filter back into the aquarium and put back into operation by plugging in the unit.
Optimal Water Level & Water Evaporation
Optimum Water Level
The Aquastyle filter has been specifically designed to operate best within the optimum water level. This is to maintain a good surface movement while reducing noise and water splash. Look for water to slide off the filter rim and flow smoothly across the water's surface to create a ripple effect.
The optimal water level for the Aquastyle is approximately 1.5" from the top of the tank. Top off to that level whenever water has evaporated.
For Freshwater: When you have noticed that the water levels has dropped below the optimum water level, add some water.
For Saltwater: When water evaporates from a saltwater aquarium, the salt itself does not evaporate. Top off with fresh water to help maintain the proper salinity level. Note: When changing saltwater, be sure to check the accurate salinity level with a hydrometer. Water can be made by using synthetic salt or you can purchase ready-made salt water.
Water Evaporation
Evaporation will occur at varying rates depending on the aquarium;s environment and room's humidity level.
Choosing to use the glass cover will help reduce the rate of water evaporation.
Tips and Tricks for Care
Feeding
When introducing fish into the aquarium, avoid feeding them for the first 24 hours.
Feed only small amounts - Do Not Overfeed Your Fish.
Missing one or two days of a feeding will not harm your fish. If you find feeding cumbersome, an automatic fish feeder can be installed to automatically feed your fish.
Cleaning
Chemical cleaning agents (including biodegradable ones) are strictly forbidden; do not use your aquarium utensils like bucket, sponge, hose etc for other household tasks.
Do not over clean. Too much cleaning can disturb the biological balance of the aquarium.
Keep aquarium clean: regularly remove algae, fish waste, food remains, dead plant remains, etc.
Plant Care
Remove old and rotting plant pieces immediately; give a weekly dose of fertilizer.
The dosing chamber can be used for fertilizer tablets, to fertilize continuously your plants.
Filtration System
Use only supplied Eheim filter pad and filter media; run it day and night; only clean or change the filter media as instructed in the "Cleaning your Filter" section, so that the bacteria cultures are not completely destroyed.
Lighting
Eheim recommends installing the light about four inches above the surface of the water. This will produce optimum illumination.
Whether you're establishing your first aquarium, or expanding your hobby experience with a new niche system, small aquariums in the 12-gallon range make a rewarding and relaxing project at home or in the office.
All home reef aquariums are miniature reefs when compared to expansive natural reefs. However, the term "nano reef" generally refers to a miniature reef system that is typically 30 gallons or less. Is a nano reef right for you?
Smaller aquariums in the range of 10-20 gallons are the ideal size for the serious beginner. When stocking your small aquarium, think scale: a community of tiny, active, and colorful tropical fish can make even the smallest setup appear grand.
Successful aquariums depend greatly on research and preparation. Before you install your new aquarium, consider aquarium placement and size to avoid laborious and costly mistakes.
