Placing and Showcasing Your Aquarium
Before you set up your new aquarium, determine the best place for your aquarium to avoid laborious and costly mistakes. Give thought to aquarium placement and avoid stressful and unnecessary aquarium relocation. Something as basic as proper aquarium placement is the difference between an enjoyable aquarium hobby and a neglected eyesore.
Maximize location
Set up your aquarium in a room where you spend most of your time. By doing so, you can fully enjoy the results of your endeavor. An aquarium placed in a back room or basement may not receive the care or attention it needs. There is also a greater chance of fish disease or equipment malfunction to remain unnoticed. Choose a room where you can view and take pleasure in your aquatic system. However, be sure to place your aquarium where it is easily accessible for regular and convenient maintenance.
Easy access to electrical outlets and a water source
Electrical outlets need to be close enough to plug in aquarium equipment without the use of extension cords. Extension cords are not only a tripping hazard, but a tangle of cords is a serious electrical hazard. If possible, locate your aquarium close to your water supply. This helps make crucial water changes and other aquarium maintenance easier for you.
Avoid proximity to heat/AC vents and exterior entrances
Stable water temperature is essential for fish health. Heating and air conditioning vents, as well as exterior entrances and windows, can drastically alter the temperature in the surrounding area. Do not place your aquarium near these areas. It is also very important to keep your aquarium out of direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight can encourage aggressive algae growth, as well as higher water temperatures.
Select a structurally stable and level location
Once fully set up, aquariums weigh at least 10 pounds per gallon. In other words, even a 10-gallon aquarium will weigh a cumbersome 100 pounds! For aquariums larger than 30 gallons, ask yourself this question, "Will the floor be able to support the weight of the aquarium once it's set up?" Most new residential flooring should not pose any structural problems. However, if you have any doubt, consult and verify with a professional to make sure your flooring is capable of supporting the weight of your aquarium setup. Also, inspect the floor and check to see if it is level. An uneven surface makes it impossible to fill your aquarium completely. An unstable aquarium is also more inclined to tip over or spring a leak.
Whether you're establishing your first aquarium, or expanding your hobby experience with a new niche system, small aquariums in the 12-gallon range make a rewarding and relaxing project at home or in the office.
All home reef aquariums are miniature reefs when compared to expansive natural reefs. However, the term "nano reef" generally refers to a miniature reef system that is typically 30 gallons or less. Is a nano reef right for you?
Smaller aquariums in the range of 10-20 gallons are the ideal size for the serious beginner. When stocking your small aquarium, think scale: a community of tiny, active, and colorful tropical fish can make even the smallest setup appear grand.
Successful aquariums depend greatly on research and preparation. Before you install your new aquarium, consider aquarium placement and size to avoid laborious and costly mistakes.
